There’s no logical reason why NFL rosters should be so small in comparison to colleges, when the NFL players participate in 5 more regular season games, 2 preseason games, and up to 4 playoff games (vs CFB’s 2).
The logical reason is all financial. But it's very real all the same. Can't justify paying that much for half a roster that will basically only see the field when walking out of the tunnel.

Here is where both sides need to give.

Players 1-55 need to take somewhat less on salary, perhaps 25%
Players 55-99 get that 25%, with the owners contributing more to salary. Players in this tier are not practice, but cannot be signed to longer than 2 years.

Do this and you don’t have to have players like Jason Taylor getting catheters hooked into their thighs at halftime to remove blood. You can rest them as necessary.

This would improve the quality of play and make the product more enjoyable.

There has to be something underlying that caused this episode. This has to be just a freak accident or something,

No, doesn't have to be anything underlying. Just a freak accident. Get hit in the heart at just the right moment and it can cause all sorts of problems.

Tangential story about freak injuries - A few years ago there was a CNN reporter, Miles O'Brien, who was on vacation and his suitcase fell over onto his arm. He got a bruise and didn't think anything of it. A few days later he had to have his arm amputated. Turned out the injury caused acute compartment syndrome and cut off circulation. Not caused by underlying condition- it's just bad luck and could happen to any of us, anytime.

And that is scary. Life can be fragile.

Are players 55-99 legitimate NFL caliber players? If not, might as well watch the XFL or USFL….

I missed this whole situation. Don’t want to search for it but was it a vicious hit or just freakishly odd? I can’t imagine this being my teammate or family member.

Prayers up for complete restoration!

There's nothing really to add here but at least it's gonna be a helluva Christmas in McKees Rocks, PA next year for the poor kids.

It's not a bad thing but it definitely is an interesting thing how so many people grieve/empathize/sympathize via GoFundMe. It doesn't necessarily solve a lot of things but it does still show that the human emotion to try to make something good come out of something horrible or to try to help in any way is still a very strong sentiment in a lot of society.

Just freakish. He took a hard shoulder to the chest from Higgins. He got up, stumbled, and passed out in the matter of 5 seconds or so

One of my coaches got kicked in the calf and he kept on playing before realizing that something was wrong.

The circulation wasn't functioning properly anymore. Almost cost him his lower leg.

College has 85 scholarship players. Not all of them get meaningful playing time, but provide depth. Take WRs…NFL teams carry 4-6. Miami at its Coker nadir carried 6. Usually it’s 8-9. Florida State actually has 13. They are there for development and insurance. For instance, we lost George and Restrepo for extended periods. That gave opportunities to the other 7 wide receivers to play. In the NFL, if such an injury run happened the receivers could be replaced with street free agents, but they wouldn’t have the familiarity with the offense that normal backups have. Thus the quality of play deteriorates.

Are players 55-99 as good? Mostly, probably not, but they prevent you from having to lean so much on your regular 54.
