DAILY DEBATE: Who is our backup QB against Notre Dame?

He’s not here. Too much riding on this season to not have someone of competence in case Beck has a set back. Preferably a power 5 grad transfer who has multiple starts and has been serviceable but passed up by a better/younger talent. Maybe even injury. You may laugh but I’d reach out to Cam Rising.

Emory = IMO gone and not to FIU - my guess another ACC program. Smart kid and good guy.

#2 - Portal
#3 - Judd but I think in Fall at some point Nickel somehow overtakes him (I think Judd right now because he’s improved and had a decent spring whereas Luke has been playing more scout team and walk-ons but it will change)
#4 - Nickel
#5 - Walk-on

Emory.

They're not going to put a backup in who hasn't played before.

Even if it's not the best player or best option.

This would be my guess as well. Emory knows the system well enough to come in off the bench with some level of confidence. He's the only QB on the roster who's actually played in a college football game.

Unless someone completely outplays him, I have to think Emory makes sense as the #2 specifically for the Notre Dame game.

My answer will remain: who gives a ****...
If it's to finish a game we are winning, just put Emory in. If it's a game we need to pass in you take your shot on Nickel. If it's for multiple games you put Nickel or even Judd in. Regardless we're ****ed even if we got a portal guy in that scenario, so it honestly doesn't matter.

I wouldn't mind more of a Run-First type of addition in Spring Portal though, as that would have by far the highest odds of actually being useful. Like for as *** as he is as a QB, someone like Alex Orji is the type I'd add in the spring portal. Not some ****ting pocket passer.

EDIT: I just looked at who was available, and its complete and utter ***....I mean unless yall want someone like James Resar who was a low 3star in Iowas 2024 class and is a 6'4" 212lb white dude from jacksonville and ran 100m in 10.67 (1.8), 10.86, 10.86 (1.0), 10.88, 10.90, 10.95, 10.98 (1.5) and 10.99 (0.3) in the race. Seems decently fast lol. Was the #23 Athlete according to 247 in 24 class.... 1 spot ahead of Jacory Barney lol

Hopefully none.
Emory ain’t looking good
Judd has improved but he ain’t ready/good
Nickel got long way to go.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we try and bring in a expierenced QB in portal for backup if we a serious team

lol someone tell Mario now that we need a quality backup, so in December he’s not using that bull**** excuse “we should have been more aggressive pursuing that position in the Spring Window”

Isn’t it amazing how the backup quarterback is everyone’s favorite player until he actually plays and everyone sees why he’s the backup.

I’d be shocked if Emory Williams wasn’t on his way to a G5 school after spring. We could really use a transfer backup but the list of capable players looking to transfer to be a second stringer isn’t long. Their best bet is another Poffenbarger type of situation. An FCS guy who wouldn’t mind possibly redshirting here while essentially being the emergency backup quarterback. There’s no reason for any backup to play in more than four games unless Beck gets hurt. Then he can make a move to start in 2026 or transfer back to a lower tier program if he’s not good enough.
