D.J. Johnson explains why he never wavered in commitment

All that matters is the fact that dj Johnson is using track to better himself as a football player. Contrary to what below avg athletes think he understands that running track can only help him as a player.

Maybe. Or, maybe the better use of his time is to sculpt his body to be an impactful Defensive lineman, not a 100 meter sprinter. The overlap in those two tasks is almost 100% non existent. He would be far better served spending his time in the weight room than the track.

This is pretty wrong on it having no overlap. Sprinting is an excellent way at learning how to generate power, which will help him on the field. There is a reason most high level sprinters are jacked in the lower body.

it'll also an excellent way to increase his VO2 max, which will help him stay on the field more. Kid is still in HS. most HS S&C programs are terrible, and I'd rather he do in-season training until he gets to an actual staff.

All this. Track may not be as good as football specific training, but it's helpful in the ways just mentioned. Plus, it's not putting the same wear and tear on the body that more football drills and lifting do, and the 100m start is very similar to the burst needed to get off the ball quickly. Unless the kid is woefully weak, his time is well spent running the 100m.

You guys will have to direct me to the part of my post suggesting he should just be sitting on the couch getting high and doing nothing instead of track. Not suggesting that it is detrimental. The time could be better spent. Training to run the 100 meter dash is not part of any defensive linemans off season work out. Sorry. You work on strength, short area quickness and conditioning. I want my football players working on football skills. Make sure to remind me to eat crow when the defensive line unit heads out to the track with their spikes to do wind sprints this spring with the track team.

I never mentioned anything about a couch, I said that I thought track was good training and I stated why I thought that. As for conditioning, running is a good way to improve that.

Is speed not a football related attribute? Most coached I know encourage both. You can run track to work on speed elements of your game and still work on football related skills. Just because someone runs track doesn't they're saying *** football. Track helps you with speed, endurance muscle strength, muscle memory, fast twitch fiber building, flexibility, explosiveness etc. There's a reason why a lot of football players have track back grounds. He'll go look at the UM track team. Most of the sprinters are Miami football players. Andre Johnson, portis, McGahee, Jones, moss etc etch all spent time on the track team. Sure as he'll didn't take away from those guys football ability. Same can be said for countless others. Other guys like Reggie Wayne did speed work at the beech and what not. Some guys still incorporate track workouts into their workout regimes they just don't run competitvetly.

Your comment is pretty much off base. I mean, do you really think football players quit all football related activities b/c they're running track? lol wow.

My point is that I'd prefer him running track than working with a ****** S&C coach. It's a lot easier to cue someone raw than to correct bad habits in the weight room. In-season training will keep him where he is, and lean. I'd rather him be at maintenance and when he gets in start his off-season bulk with actual legit S&C coaches, as opposed to fixing potential ****ups that happen in the meantime.

One of the dumbest post i've read. You'll eat crow when our DL is flattening OL on their back in the 4th QTR because they're quicker and better conditioned. Getting off the block in track is very similar to jumping the OL out of a three point stance. Let the kids come in conditioned and ready to pack on muscle. Let Kool teach the technique not some HS coaching assistant making 15k a year.

Did this really turn into another track thread?

I appreciate hearing how prospects do in track, but ****. Some of you all think it's the end all

I haven't seen one person who thinks track is end all be all. It's a big important part to a players game and how their game will transition to the next level. The best players have an element of speed to their game to go along with other football related intangibles.

Goes back to the Davin cook vs Joe yearby debates. The homers and others claimed yearby was better cause he started, he's a cane etc etc. I thought cook was better b/c of his explosiveness/speed element.

.....and no, this isn't another track thread. It's about dj Johnson and dj Johnson happens to run track to improve himself as a football player amongst other things.

DJ Johnson happens to do a lot of things, I'm sure. Doesn't change the fact that this has devolved into a track thread where a small handful of posters argue over the same BS repeatedly.

obsession - an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind.

I can admit, I was posting very drunk from the company St Patty party last night. They thought if they held it on a Thursday I wouldn't get hammered and come in to work very hungover today. They were wrong.

/still would rather he be doing football stuff, sorry for bringing your couch into this kryptonite

Yeah, I'm not sure how your vile slur against my couch hasn't gotten you band, but I guess justice is spotty around here.

Maybe DJ could run with a football or they could get a really fast kid, paint "QB" on his back and give him a 3m head start.

So what are you trying to do? Turn this into a got dam cry baby thread. You're obsession with biching and crying is more disturbing than guys talking about how football and track relate. Not real hard to ignore something you know nothing about or don't care about.

If you have more interesting subjects then start a thread. Better than going around crying about other peoples interest all the got dam time.
