Curtis Porter is the most valuable player we have on the team. He is the glue to the defense. When Porter gets back into the line up we can look for our defense to improve a lot. No other player can do the things he can on the defensive line.

For UM to play the scheme Coach D’O is trying to establish we will need a few Porters. These are the type of DT’s moving forward that UM must land. There is not an option for UM to miss out on any DT’s such as Porter.

This is some game film of last year that I feel makes Porter the most valuable player on the team. Porter playing the way he does will open up lanes for our other DT's. Porter will require a double team which can free up some of the smaller DT's to do what they do best and that is to shed blocks and get up field.

This is right after the ball was snapped. We get no penetration and are getting pushed around. The offensive line is driving or defensive line backwards

86.jpg

Same play as above. Our DT's have lost the leverage upfront opening up a nice running lane. Our DT's are about three yards down field now.

87.jpg

Still the same play. Now our DT's are getting pancaked. This running play picked up about 8 yards. This was the results of a play that was happening a lot. Which has carried over to this season. Upfront we just are not getting it down

Curtis Porter finally checks into the game for the first time

Pre-Snap - Porter finally checks into the game for the first time. Let's look at the difference he makes up front.

89.jpg

Immediately Porter pushes his man deep into the backfield. Take a look at how Porter is the only one able to move the line of scrimmage while the rest of the D Line is getting pushed back.

Play Number 2

Pre Snap of Play 2 with Porter

91.jpg

Porter is the DT next to Chick in this play. Look at the Big man battle in the trenches and takes on the double team like a man! No getting pushed back here. Leaving Jimmy Gaines the lane to fly in untouched to lay the devastating hit on the running back.

92.jpg

Well Jimmy Gaines is apart of the 3 stoogers crew so of course he runs pass the play..LOL Jimmy no hard feelings just had to point that out..LOL. This runs ends up being about 10 yards or so.

Play Number 3

Pre-Snap of play 3

Again Porter pushes his man into the backfield almost directly into the running back. Everyone else is struggling to maintain leverage.

Play Number 4

95.jpg

Pre Snap of Play four with Porter- Porter is 2nd the DT from the bottom.

96.jpg

Porter is the 2nd UM player from the bottom. Porter getting up field after the snap.

97.jpg

USF called a screen on this play and the ball is being thrown to the RB. Now it is time for Porter to get his hustle on.

98.jpg

Porter turns to run. The earth starts to shakes!

99.jpg

Go Porter! Look at him rumble!..LOL This is a 320 lb man with quick feet..lol

100.jpg

Porter with the shoe string tackle..LOL I was surprised he was able to make this play. Get the man some oxygen..lol

Play Number 5

101.jpg

Pre Snap of play 5. Porter is 2nd from the bottom next to chick

102.jpg

Porter pushes is man back again.

103.jpg

Porter and chick Swallow up the running back.

Play Number 6

104.jpg

Pre Snap Play 6. Porter is the 2nd DT from the top.

105.jpg

Again Porter destroys the line of scrimmage.

Porter has engaged his man. Pushed him into the backfield and tossed him to the side. Now he is in pursuit. I used this play to show a few things. Notice how Porter is the one who has beat his man. Everyone else is still being blocked. These are issues that we had at K State.

I like Porter too, but he isn't a missing piece. We have a lot of missing pieces, unfortunately.

Correct. To me, Porter is a nice player but an above average JAG. Let's not turn him into a player that he isn't - an impact guy.

I like the guy, but the guy has been too injured and far too inconsistent to label him a difference maker on D.

This post is showing you exactly what kind of DT's we need to run this scheme. Porter is far from a JAG. Not even close.

Porter is not getting pushed around nor is he playing games in the trenches. We he lines up he is extremely physical and gets after it. Porter fights in the trenches like a man. He is the key to the defensive line without a doubt. Porter steps in the game and starts tossing linemen like rag dogs while getting physical and nasty upfront. We need that now very badly. That soft approach of holding the linemen up like they are ball dancing has to stop.

In the BC game last year. While everyone was getting pushed around Porter was in their banging heads.

This

That was against USF last year, and we did play well up front w/him in there. That's solid evidence from the screen caps above.

The problem with calling him an impact playmaker is that he's never proven he can get over injury and do this consistently. And even when he does get back, he has to prove he demands a double-team, and the other DL have to beat their guys one-on-one so we can get pressure on both the QB and the running game.

Unfortunately he's prob not going to be in tip top conditioning coming off the surgery

He is our best DT but he is also always hurt. I don't think he has even played in a full season worth of games and he has been here for 4 years. Don't think he is a world beater but he is better than Darius Smith who gets pushed back into the lap of our safeties every play.

He has barely played in two years, we have no idea what he would have done this year. I agree that we need better DT, and that he might make a difference, but you can't be an MVP without doing something on the field.

Not having Porter is one of the main reason the defense sucks. At the NT/DT spot we continue to lose the battle at the point of attack. If your NT/DT can't hold up in a 2 gap assignment it can be a long day unless you can cover for him with great LB play or DE play. Porter does not lose many battles at the point of attack. He holds his ground very well. He is a must need at this point. We don't have any other DT that can do what he does. So he is the most important piece to the defense.

Point is we need Porter

AND Luther. Luther isn't strong as Porter but the boy gets penetration.

Agreed on all of that, but you're missing one key thing: we need Porter to stay healthy and do what you're saying he can do for a full season. He has yet to come close to doing that as of yet. That is the big question with Porter.

Also--what Ringz said about Luther. I feel that Porter and Luther should have been our starting DT's from day one this season. Porter didn't get there due to injuries, and Luther didn't get there due to his daddy being in his ear after BC. Hopefully with in the next couple of weeks, we'll see that tandem in the middle once we get to Atlanta to take on GT.
