Current Scholarship Numbers

Not a d*ck question. Understand he was offered as a gray-shirt to replace Butler but had to announce PWO bc he enrolled in the fall. Staff kept their word to a kid who turned down other scholarships offers to come to Miami. Every D1 team needs a kicker, punter and snapper on scholarship.

Spicer is, also, on scholarship. Grad scholarship so I am not sure how that counts. (J. Murphy is also a grad scholarship)
Appreciate you clearing this up. I thought for some reason it was common to give a long snapper a scholarship like junior senior year.

I don't know how many recruits we have in the 2019 class that are EEs, but I seem to recall we have 3 (maybe 2) EE spots (i.e. 2018 initial counters) that can still be counted backwards in the 2018 class.

Transfers are a somewhat different, more flexible animal, but my understanding is they still need to account for an initial counter. However, a midyear transfer, if the school is under 85 total scholarships, and assuming there is space in both classes (2018 vs. 2019), can count as an i.c. in either year (i.e., backwards to 2018 or forward to 2019). Between back-counting EEs and transfers into the 2018 class, at most, we can get 27/28 in this class (assuming we have 2/3 counters left over in 2018).

By my count, we are at 19 total signees (14, see above post by@ofacekilla) + commits (Hedley) + transfers (Martin, Osborn, Kennedy, Bolden). Assuming all of the above is correct (plus Spicer for a total of 76 scholarship athletes), and assuming nobody else transfers or gets dismissed from the team, then we have enough initial counters to get to 84/85 -- 27/28 counters - 19 signees/commits/transfers = space for 8/9 more. 76 + 8/9 = 84/85.

None of this math is ever correct, though, because there's always some random walk-on who nobody knows got a scholarship, or the initial counters are off by one or two because of many years of back-counting.
Yeah we have 3 scholarship that can be backcounted by any EE's or transfers that arrive in Spring, making a total of 28 NEW players that can be put on scholarship. This also includes if any walkons are given a scholarship who have NOT been in the program for at least 2 years. I have no clue how long Few has been here, but if he's been if he's being put on scholarship and this is not his 3rd year, then he would count as an Initial Counter.

While its possible to be at the total of 85, I completely doubt we will be. Also consider that more players will likely transfer out after Spring (maybe 1-2 more like Tyreic Martin, One of the qbs, an OLineman, Wr, who knows). I'd say the max we bring in is like 25 again. Secondly you have to consider that unless we have a mass exodus of players transfering out (might not be the worst thing for us tbh), then we likely won't be able to sign a full class next signing class. We only have 12 seniors on the roster! We have maybe 4 or 5 Juniors that might transfer/declare for the draft (Deejay, Irvin, Garvin, Bandy, Martin). ...so if the remaining scholarship spots available this year are taken by players who will be in the program for more than a year, it means unless a bunch of guys transfer out, we really don't have much space for 2020 recruits.

I think a bunch will leave though. Just can't see all our qbs staying, all the Olineman who have no shot at PT, and we're going to get a couple declare for the draft most likely.

this all seems correct to me. What i'm not sure on is if Clay James is an initial counter or not. Is he confirmed on scholarship? I havent seen any official news on that, except for an article when he was being recruited that said he would eventually be placed on scholarship. Generally, they wait until year 3 for that(like they just did with Few), so as not to use an initial counter.

I have us at 20 total(im including Tate Martell now), with room for 27(if clay james is on scholarship) or 28.
