Could Simpson be the 4th DT this year?

If we have to Portal a 4th DT, what does that tell you about our development lol. Do we really need another Marley Cook/CJ clark/Deen type of player? Also it wouldn't be CanesInsight without a fan people mad that a player is performing well in practice
No we need another Barrow

Damien Lewis is sky high on Justin Scott, loves him

I mean that would be nice, but someone of that caliber likely isn't going to come here to be the 3rd/4th DT. Scott and Blay seem to be solidified starters, and are definitely a strong duo. Are Jones and Horton really that bad that we have to get a cheap and below average portal rental? I could also see Blount getting some snaps at DT

Not in my opinion. Last off season all you heard was how much better Campbell was than expected. He was a little better, but really what was going on was the whole DT room was knicked up all off season. Their were walk ons out there at times. Don't dare say someone's knicked up. Blay is the only proven player at DT. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit the portal at DT.

Jones is still very raw and young, I wouldn’t put expectations on him this year to be in the rotation

Horton is an interesting one

No. The 4th man in the rotation is not on the team right now. Also, I don't know about everyone else. But I am not happy when my most experienced OL in Cooper tells the media that Blay is the DT giving him the most challenges at practice.
If Mauigoa said Bain gives him the most trouble of all the edges, would you not like that? I mean Blay is the oldest and has the highest floor of all our DTs right now. Hopefully Scott and Moten flip the switch this season, but Not seeing why a guy objectively viewed as good giving an olineman the hardest time would be a problem.

If the staff wants to bring in a guy to play ahead of those guys, that’s fine. I’m not going to be the one to complain. But I expect the guy to be someone around the level of a CJ clark, Anthony Campbell or Deen. My point was that it’s a little concerning that we can’t at least get Horton ready to play at that level. I see your point that Jones may be too young week 1 against ND, but I would hope he’s playing a big role come October/november and can be at worst be the solidified DT3 heading into 2026

The kids we do hear about are "Greentree all Americans" and the ones we don't hear about "won't do anything obviously" all under the guise of not knowing a **** thing because we don't actually see practice, we don't actually see the new scheme and ZERO evidence for anything but hey.... CIS gonna CIS.

Right up there with the Glue Slurpee drinker saying Nickel is done 8 practices in.

Breathtaking analysis

You have? I haven't. In fact, I keep waiting to hear his name, hoping that he's that guy as far being that 4th DT, but hasn't seemed that way. Maybe I missed it.

If Scott is the goods, then I'm feeling ok about our Scott/Moten/Blay rotation. But, I'd be lying to you if I told you that our DT rotation is ready for ND. I kept hoping it would be Horton but I don't see that ever happening. I'd feel a lot better with one DT from the portal as a rotational guy to be that 4th or 5th DT.
Yea jones have been getting some good reviews lately from the people that been at the practices

I mean more surprised if they don't swing for a portal DT than if they didn't add one. As soon as Mesidor announced he was returning, EDGE stopped being a Need and DT became the clear one in the trenches. Ideally we get a big NT type. But we need a guy with a high floor. We have guys at DT with high ceilings. We need a guy we can just count on reliably to be solid.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. The thread asks if Simpson could be in the rotation. I believe you agree with me that the answer is a hard no, not if we want to beat playoff teams like ND, or even run-centric ACC teams like GT. Am I right?

Our last high round DT was Allen Bailey in 2011, and he was only 3rd round. We've put out a number of decent to All Pro DEs but have been drinking our own Kool Aid for far too long at DT. The only way to solve that is to constantly be upgrading until the talent proves itself on the field, just like we did at DE and CB. Need the best available in the portal, not to rely on a true freshman at the point of attack.

Is Horton even practicing? I haven’t seen a picture or even heard his name in any interview.
I like Horton but anything from him this year is a bonus

Blay/Scott/Moten is solid but we need another impact player there. But every playoff team is probably thinking the same thing

That's definitely the concern. We better be better back channelers that the best Wall Street insider traders.
