Squib kick is a must in that spot if you aren't 100% sure your kicker can blast it in the endzone. Call timeout to at least make the effort to ice the kicker even if it doesn't work most of the time.
He is a young HC and some panic set in after they tied it up. I coached for a long time and understand how you can panic when you come back and tie up a game that you were dead in the water in.
