Bad hire IMO.
CMU was at their best 3 years ago when they won the MAC with a decent QB & rushing attack that allowed for them to still be able to throw the ball down the field.
Once they lost Richardson, they fell back into oblivion because they became a one-dimensional run team that couldn't throw the ball. If you're going to be one-dimensional, the dimension you'd rather have is throwing the ball, because Offenses who can throw are much more difficult to defend than O's who can only run.
Drinkall has spent the majority of his career developing under Jeff Monken, who has only ever really ran the Triple-Option going back to his Hawaii & Navy days under Paul Johnson.
Meaning, he doesn't really know how to properly implement & build a regular style Spread Offense. He's an Army Option guy, so that means he's probably gonna try to turn CMU into an option team as well & I don't see that yielding any good results.
The best teams in the MAC always win with having at the very least decent QB play & a strong run game. The example of having a strong run game with no QB play already exists in the MAC with Northern Illinois & they haven't had much success either.
Thanks!
Doesn't sound too promising…
