I have always felt his praise should go farther:
He is the greatest position coach in the history of college football based on his track record.
And anyone that says differently I need a list of who and why they feel differently because I don’t think it’s close when you look at the big picture and the success he has on his resume from an nfl pro bowl/HOF standpoint… and he wasn’t even a position coach for that long when you compare the raymonds of the world.
HOF worthy resume IMO
There was a gentleman at UM who coached DLine named Harold Allen who coached and sent a bunch of his players to the next level. This was before UM was a national presence as a program (putting it nicely).
Before UM he coached Key West HS during the 1950s, coaching the Mira brothers and Boog Powell and beating an undefeated Coral Gables team during early 1960s which was nationally ranked and rarely defeated during era.

That happened with Sarge and kehoe because they were the two everyone would go to for any issues etc. they were the only coaches everyone respectedLarry Coker scapegoating him and others is blanket party stuff.

He was gently nudged out when JJ was hired.
You want to know the worst part of this story? His ashes were spead at the Orange Bowl. In 2004. That's some bad luck.
I remember that sh going down and thinking "WTF is happening? Our program is crumbling because we have (had) a weak and selfish "leader" who can't lead." The more time passes, the more I dislike Larry Coker. That happened with Sarge and kehoe because they were the two everyone would go to for any issues etc. they were the only coaches everyone respected
Agreed. He was like many coaching hires at UM - panic driven and lazy.Coker should have never been hired.
Honestly I felt the same way at first. But then I had to be more honest with myself. It was **** near solely our blame that the man ever was put in that position in the first place. Do I think the alternative would have worked no not in the least but that's a discussion for another time. But reality is Larry Coker is a really good guy. He's likable, he's personable, but he's far from an alpha. He had no business being put in that position. So to expect anything more than we got I don't think is being realistic. I wish that he would have learned how to delegate responsibilities. Take advice from the individuals we had on staff who had the necessary experience to lead him around that curve. Won't even get in to his recruiting strategies. But most of Larry Coker is just a really nice calm passive guy. When in the **** do you ever find a great passive head coach? You don't...I remember that sh going down and thinking "WTF is happening? Our program is crumbling because we have (had) a weak and selfish "leader" who can't lead." Probably the first and only time I won't take issue with something you said...Coker should have never been hired.
Here's the winning lines from your post:Honestly I felt the same way at first. But then I had to be more honest with myself. This topic has been rehashed countless times but hasn’t it been well documented that the team leaders at the time were convinced they had a legitimate shot at an NC and didn’t want someone from the outside to come in and muck things up. They knew Coker could be “managed” and even went to the AD and pleaded Coker be given the job.Honestly I felt the same way at first. But then I had to be more honest with myself. Sort of. That's the basic gist to what went on. More detail oriented it wasn't someone else coming in. It was Donna shalalalalalalalalala had Barry Alvarez come in as soon as she was hired and tour the campus, tour the facilities and meet the team. We all knew he was handpicked by her to come in and take over the program. So it wasn't the fact SOMEONE else was coming in. It was Barry Alvarez specifically and his system coming in, we didn't want ****** things up. So faced with that alternative we went to Paul Dee and said we wanted Larry Coker and no one else. This topic has been rehashed countless times but hasn’t it been well documented that the team leaders at the time were convinced they had a legitimate shot at an NC and didn’t want someone from the outside to come in and muck things up.
