Coach Mark Richt is a wonderful person

He started all this. And he left without taking a bunch from us. He loved us truly.

And he was part of the class that came in 1978, the first of its kind in UM history laden with so many of what these days would be known as "5-star" talent. That class got it started, especially when Schnellenberger arrived the following year. He has left quite a legacy at his alma-mater. Class act.

I like Richt as a person, but what exactly did he do to fix the program long term ? He hand picked Diaz , then recommend him as his successor. The team was already failing when Diaz took over, and what really turned the program around was hitting rock bottom and having Kirk Herbstreit put UM on blast. That was embarrassing and exposed the UM admin and BOT as a disgrace. That’s when they finally decided to put money into the program. Richt had to put in his own money for the IPF- and it didn’t spur a change in mindset for the penny pinchers at UM that put the E over the W. So I guess you could say our resurgence is tied to Richt in that he helped us reach absolute rock bottom through his DC hire, and then we climbed our way back out. If Herbstreit does not call UM out, I think we’d have replaced Diaz with a G5 hire like Sunbelt Billy

He didn't recommend Diaz I don't believe. I thought Diaz went behind his back. He just never bad mouthed Diaz. Not the same as recommending.

It’s not badmouthing to say, "I think you should evaluate multiple candidates." Or when he walked away without a buyout and UM said it wanted to pay Temple $4 million to bring Diaz back, he could at least have chimed in, "Hes a good guy but there are other good coaches that won’t involve buyouts" or "I think he’d be a great HC hire after some seasoning at Temple.” As I said he’s a good man and I’m glad he was HC but no need to write a hagiography. Nothing really changed after Richt , at least not until the program and UMs rep had been burnt to ashes.

Nobody has fixed the program long term — the other poster didn’t say that. He was implying that Richt was owed money and bypassed it because he’s a good dude who isn’t greedy.

I’ll tell you what he didn’t do.. Hold the school hostage with his giant extended contract once he realized the game had passed him by.. He immediately stepped down, without pay and with grace..

He also started the IPF movement (with his own $) & led the only good season in over a decade.

Besides that, not much.

You realize he had already started getting sick right? He likely already knew by this point and just didn’t let it get out. Multiple porsters were saying something was wrong with him that final season. MULTIPLE!!

Should have had Butch over Manny.

Could have's and Should have's were plenty - the Administration fell flat on it's *** for years and years and years.
