The strength of a recruiting class comes down to:
- Number of Top 100 signees
- How you fare at the premium positions
- Average rating per recruit
We only signed one Top 100 recruit, a center ranked 96th overall in the composite. Four programs (Texas, Bama, UGA, Oregon) hit or exceeded the 300-point mark this year, signed at least four 5* recruits at premium positions, AND signed at least seven Top 100 recruits. The team rounding out the Top 5 (OSU) signed two 5* recruits at premium positions and seven Top 100 players. We're nowhere close to recruiting at an elite level as a program.
The premium positions that command the most money are QB, WR, OT, DL, and CB. We also had a glaring need at safety. Nickel is a solid get at QB. The WR class is solid but unspectacular and we once again failed to land a premier WR1. We did great on the interior of the OL, but the OT haul is highly suspect. Lowe and Scroggins are great gets at edge, but the DT class is clearly lacking. Antoine is the only CB we signed who looks different than the types of corners we've landed for many years. We completely struck out at safety.
The one metric that's a positive for this class is average rating per recruit. What makes this class look reminiscent of the types of classes signed by previous coaches who failed here, though, is that we struck out on Top 100 players and loaded up on low 4*'s that inflate our blue-chip ratio. Historically there's a world of difference between a low 4* and a high 4* in terms of hit rate.
We need to absolutely crush it in the portal with headliners at premium positions. Hope it works out for us.
