CIS reacts to Jai Lucas being Miami's new head coach

So, we are again hiring a first-time head coach (whom Duke passed over for that position) instead of a proven head coach…..

I hope he becomes our coach K but it feels like we settled-again……

Making the transition from assistant to HC is hard and the vast majority struggle in their first several years. NIL makes it even harder.

Hiring a recruiter is the dumbest of all strategies in the NIL era… and especially a recruiter who has built his reputation at schools that stack elite recruits because of institutional prestige and success.

Kind of shocking that they make this kind of hire after seeing how well hiring a recruiter worked for football.

Hiring Mario has been such a bad thing? Who do you think we should have hired instead of him?

If Cam Ward stays in the 2024 draft how do we feel about Mario? If the perception and reality of his entire tenure so far rest on a late decision of a one year rental maybe the foundation is weaker than it should be 3 seasons in.

Who recruited Cam Ward to Miami?

Our NIL spend has been top 5 since the start of NIL. Compare that to the results and get back to me.

Could have been different if we didn’t drop consecutive games to GT and Cuse with the best rental QB in America. But it wasn’t. And isn’t.

But Mario is a distraction. This is about an assistant who will learn how to be a head coach at Miami after spending his coaching career with teams that consistently and massively underperformed their talent level.

What works (or could work again) at Miami really doesn't stock up the same when comparing other programs and how coaches can or will prosper. Coach L caught some lightning in a bottle but also the bottle was empty more than we would like somewhat too often.

It's also a brave new NIL world, even developing as we watch, and a proven HC isn't a surebet conqueror of same. For that reason I agree with Peter Aziz and others that Jai Lucas technically being a non-proven-HC is not necessarily the adverse situation the alarmists make it out to be.

That being said I am somewhat pessimistic that great recruiting at mainly basketball schools Duke and Kentucky, where football doesn't rule the NIL nearly as much as basketball does (unlike Miami)... will mean Jai Lucas at Miami can/will bring us the talent we desperately need as we build a team from zero.

His focus (or expertise) on the defensive side is nice, but not what attracts 4stars and one-and-dones... they won't come to Miami to learn to be a great defensive player as their main priority unless the offensive side, glory and NIL and adoring capacity fans are there as well. I am doubtful in this regard but remain hopeful, and of course hope he proves all the negatives and naysayers really wrong.

I'm of the "why are we prepping to go through the dog years of waiting for a new hc to cut his teeth" camp after all we've built.

Now we can prepare for a fresh wave of

"We've got to get the toxic players out, so not this year"

"He needs to get his own guys in. So not this year"

"He needs to hire better assistants so not this year"

"This is his (first, second, third) year, be patient"!!

Meh. It was a good run but basketball just bought itself 3 - 4 years of potential mediocrity.

Hope I'm wrong but this movie seems very familiar to me.
