Chris Caputo šŸ“ˆā¬†ļøā¬†ļø

GW lost their best player before the season started and has won their last two (Dayton and 12-2 URI) without their leading scorer. And their NIL budget is peanuts compared to top A-10 teams.

If he's not the guy thereā€™s gonna be a lot of regret in a few years.
When Coach L was on top of his game, Chris was by his side. Wins and losses aside, Coach L is up there with some of the best regarding BB knowledge and teaching ability and Caputo is a disciple. Good coach, good fit, good guy. Would be a mistake to overlook him.

Yep, Caputo's a very sound coach and has done a nice job at moribund GW but ... my belief is that we really need a more dynamic, charismatic type of coach if we really want to turn the next corner with this program.

Recruiting prowess should be Jobs #1, #2 and #3 for whoever we search for. At all levels -- AAU, HS, JuCo, Portal and world hoops hotbeds like Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia and the like. Not to mention recruiting of impressive (work ethic, strategic knowledge and recruiting) Assistant Coaches.

A Pitino/Calipari "type" -- minus 30 years or so. Supported by a highly competitive NIL and administrative budget. Jans is the best name I've seen thus far.

Caputo is an elite recruiter and dynamic personality. Itā€™s the last of HC experience that gives me pause

"Elite recruiter" is a term often used loosely. I'm hoping for truly "elite" -- top of the profession "elite."

Maybe that is a pipe dream but that would be my goal going into the hiring process. And, by that standard, don't think Chris is THAT guy.

I think itā€™s totally fair to have some questions and reservations.

And itā€™s somewhat bad timing for Chris because heā€™s still in the middle of his build at GW.

This year they were picked to finish second to last in the A10 and who they expected to be their best player was lost for the year due to a preseason injury.

But the guy is just super smart and absolutely relentless. He is a guy who will build the program - from booster support to NIL infrastructure and recruitingā€¦ AND heā€™s a high level basketball mind too.

Heā€™s also very loyal and a guy who wants to build and not just jump around. When he left Miami the program was back on the verge of being a top tier ACC program after the FBI bsā€¦ things started to fall apart in the second season following his departure.

And right now GW is ranked above Virginia, Syracuse, and Miami in Kenpom.

"Builds" at GW go nowhere in the end. Even with modest expectations. Mike Jarvis, Tom Penders, Karl Hobbs -- all excellent coaches who rode that rollercoaster.

I do like the stability Caputo would bring. And no disputing he's a smart basketball mind.

If, though, Chris were announced as UM HC would that generate ANY excitement among our fan base (such as it is), or among our current roster, or with recruits?

Would there be any "run" on the box office by fans - old and new - to buy tix? Of course, that didn't happen with any of our previous hires either so probably unfair to even ask. Still, it would be nice to see, just once, a UM HC hire generate that sort of excitement all around!

Our very first CaputoBros have emerged - I look forward to many years of imbalanced conversation about the basketball program, too!

What was imbalanced?

We went to 4 sweet 16ā€™s and an elite 8 and final four over the last 13 years and the coach resigned less than 3 years after the final four run when it was clear he wasnā€™t the right person for the time/job.

We had a top 12 recruiting class last year. We have a top 30 NIL fund for basketball.

The last 13 years have unquestionably been the best time in HISTORY to be a fan of the basketball program.

Also, yesā€¦ Iā€™ll definitely take the title of CaputoBro.

Nothing yet.

But we see how football and baseball are discussed here -- when emotion, inside intel. access and relationships come into play.

Fair but very different circumstances.

It was well known that Mario was NOT a high level football mind. And JD was a promotion with no experience from a failed staff.

Both were either objectively bad or highly questionable hires. I certainly wanted neitherā€¦ though I thought maybe Mario could work if they outspent his limitations.

Chris left at the pinnacle of Miamiā€™s program building success, has learned some lessons as a HC, and is halfway through the best GW season in a long, long time. And Chris - unlike Mario - is a really smart dude and a smart basketball mind.

If we settle on Caputo, weā€™re not serious about basketball. Only reason heā€™s being mentioned on this board is because he was a long time assistant of Coach L. Without that connection heā€™s be an afterthought. Plain and simple.

Many here chastise our football and baseball programs for hiring form within and rightfully so when our administration is lazy and settling in the easy hire.

Weā€™ve got a chance to take a big step here with a hire and build off of what Coach Lā€™s built. Need a guy with a winning track record and more experience. 2 years at the helm of a mediocre mid major is hardly what I want for this program if weā€™re trying get better.

It would be the most Miami thing ever

Again, if they interview a wide range of candidates and determine he's the best one, great, hire him.

But I strongly suspect if he ends up being the guy, it'll be because we "Miami jobbed" the hire, at which point its only a matter of time before it blows up in our faces.

...appreciate everyone's insights. I'm rooting for (MSSt) Chris Jan's myself (they have a big game Saturday vs Kentucky and will be easy top 10 if they win.)

Just an idle thought, the rather new and very unsettled portal and nIL world is inarguably quite challenging. Certainly different than past decades and Coach L didnt seem to really prosper therein...

...one point could be that 10-20 years of solid HC success might not necessarily equate to equal success in the new world we have, and the required drastic rebuilding needed, in culture-challenging nIL-Miami.

No clue what skills and experiences would therefore be best, but somehow think old-school might not be spot on. I hope the hiring powers that be are wise and wary.
