Chad Thomas at SDE

You say that, but our defense has looked different every single season since they got here, and why should this year be any different. As we get more talented players, the coaches will be able to do more things on defense. Chad is a unique player and I could definitely see the coaches doing some different things with him because of his unique skill set. I just dont understand why people are getting mad abdout it already when we really dont know what the coaches are planning.

Where have you been the last 3 years? Not watching our d I can tell you that. This is how I define our scheme and player placement. Square peg round hole.

Most on this board know the type of talent we have/had. Do we use their athleticism to our advantage or ask them to sit back and react vs attack. It has been the same crap the last 3 years and now you think they are going to change? smh

The last three years I have ACTUALLY been paying attention to our defense instead of just seeing that we do bad and bash everything the coaches are doing. Our defense has been different every single year that they have been here and I dont understand why people just assume that its going to be exactly the same and that Chad is going to be wasted.

And can you please tell me who all those really athletic guys who we are telling to read and react are. We've asked guys like Chic and OP to read and react on the line, but I dont see them as being crazy athletic. Guys such as Mccord and AQM are attacking almost every time they are in. Ill agree that the we ran the same stunts too often which made them not very successful, but Im not going to start bashing the coaches during the off-season when we dont really know what to expect.

If the season comes along and we are doing the exact same thing and Chad is unsuccessfully being used to only two gap, then bash away. I just dont see the point of doing it now when no one truly know what to expect.

denzel perryman said that they are doing the same thing on defense they did last year and that the coaches really didnt change anything.

Citing the one player most noted to be changing positions this year as your example of how nothing changes may not be overly convincing to some folks.

But you would hope that our senior 4 year starter would know the defense, right?

Pure comedy on this thread right now.

Chad is a SDE in any system. He has the frame and skill set to play in diverse roles. Just because he plays the same position as Chic, doesn't mean that he will play in all the same packages. By now, we should have learned that we are multiple up front. Seldom do we play in a classic 50 front; 2-gapping with two 4's and 0. Just re-watch a few games. Just because we have 3 guys with their hands in the dirt, doesn't mean that they're all two-gapping. Most of the time they're shaded or slanting. Sometimes, two over-shifted DT's are two-gapping (along with the two stacked inside backers). We mostly two-gap, like how people describe, against two-back personnel groupings.

I'm excited about Chad being able to play SDE in our system. That means he can be on field on 1st and 2nd down. We know he's a great pass rusher, so that means that he can play on 3rd down too. He's already in line to be an all down player for us. That's a good thing. Also, don't sleep on Chic as a mentor for this kid. I think we'll end up having a formidable rotation between those two dudes.

good post. Let's not forget Chad, despite being a great pass rush prospect, played DT a ton last year. Lots of experience doing the dirty work. He can be an every day lineman quick.

And to be schooled in how to address such questions.

We finally have the type of DL we want with this new class in Chad, Moten, Wyche, Jenkins, Heurtelou, Harris and D Jackson. We still have McCord, AQM, Kamalu for 2 years, as well, and maybe Hamilton and Moore will show something before they graduate. Then we have the Seniors in Pierre and Chick. This year's lineup is too thin among the veterans, so not ideal depth of experience. But the overall talent is level is way up at the same time as we have a better secondary.

We have to expect Golden and D'O to be smart enough to use these better weapons differently than they did in the past, where they were gapped out talent-wise. It's also year 4 of their scheme, and the young guys like Chad have the older guys like Chick to learn from. If that doesn't happen, then I will join the chorus line of critics. But WEZ et al. have the more rational argument, and we should see a vastly improved defense this year.

really? how is it rational to expect that coaches that produced 2 of the worst defenses in school history back to back will ever put out anything remotely close to a CANES level defense that we were conditioned to see for most of the last 30 years before F.A.G. showed up?

will it be "better"? maybe. but it is IRRATIONAL to expect that these coaches with their BS soft read and react scheme will ever put out a dominant defense.

I'm still behind Golden, but at the same time feel he's made potentially catastrophic mistakes by not addressing the defense more proactively by replacing Dorito and moving to a more traditional 4-3 defense that better fits what the Miami has to offer. AQM and McCord just don't look like OLB to me, they're pass-rushing DE's in a 4-3 set. Chad Thomas could be beastly in a 4-3 defense IMO, I'm still not sure the kind of impact he can make as a 3-4 DE.

In the end I hope everything aligns in the cosmos and Dortio and Gorlden make this scheme work, they seemed **** bent to fit that round peg into a square hole. I just don't see it.

I didn't see Al as a near sighted car salesman for much of the first 3 years, I thought he had the potential to be the CEO this program needs, but that CEO would've witnessed the abomination on defense the last 2 years and made a major overhaul.

Our DL aren't allowed to fire off the ball and penetrate. I hate this coaching staff so much I could strangle them to death with a chordless phone.

I'm with everyone on their frustration from last year. Duke and Louisville were to Golden what LSU Peach Bowl and last game at Orange Bowl vs. UVA were to Coker and Shannon. Fans have gone from being cautiously optimistic to "prove it". I worry that Golden is stubborn and won't change, but I just cannot believe he's as clueless as the other two and unaware that he needs results on defense now. That is why I am expecting a better defense, not just talent-wise, but scheme-wise. If not, then we'll have a new DC in January.

I don't agree with the sentiment, but I have to admit that I laughed hard at this one. :rollcanes:

you're starting to see the light. you'll get there real quick this year.

I gave F.A.G. the benefit of the doubt after 2012 due to the horrible roster BUT I was very skeptical that any staff that could put out that bad of a defense at Miami would ever be any good.

then 2013 came around. after the first 4 games where we played the worst offenses in D1, we saw this defense get embarrassed over and over again and it was really the exact same **** as 2012.

VT game was a nail in the coffin and the Duke game was like cremating the coffin. I didnt think anyone would be left supporting these clowns after the UL game, but I guess some are really ******* slow

No one is happy and we all hate the ******* defense and want to win. But jesus christ man, we have to put up with a couple more seasons of it anyway so why let it completely ruin your enjoyment of following the program? I don't need to destroy every conversation I have about the team with a dissertation on why this staff is a bunch of **** ups and how they have to prove it to me.

Does that make me slow?

Life is tough enough, between going to work every day, balancing the girlfriend, etc. Football is something that I actually enjoy following as a way to escape, and here in the ******* middle of May, when there is nothing going on and no games to watch and no practice to follow, I would rather just get excited about the ******* stud freshmen arriving on campus and recognize that maybe, just maybe this kid is good enough that it doesn't matter what ******* system he plays in, he will just be a stud regardless. So get off your high horse and stop ruining the board with the same argument we have all already heard a thousand times over.

Hasn't ruined anything for me and I will always cheer for the Canes. I can still dream of what this defense could look like with a guy like Jim Leavitt calling the shots as DC.

Just got listed with the Anti Golden crowd....HIGH FIVE

I really think Chad is a prototype SDE, but it depends on the way he's used. He'd also flourish as an edge rusher in a 3-4 if asked to go forward and attack.

This thread has beat the scheme to death and I'm not going to rehash it as well, but you simply can't deny better talent is going to do a better job executing the defense, regardless of scheme.

At some point or another before I die I think Al and company will get this ship rolling to the point where we are a dynasty again. The only problem I will ever have with Al, in regards to putting up with all the embarassing losses in between, is why the **** would he implement a defense that HE KNEW would take at least 4-5 years to implement talent wise at UM. Smh. He must have really trusted Donna not to fire his a$$ thats for **** sure.

Because I do think we are finally starting to see that 3-4 flex/4-3 base, or whatever the **** we play, talent starting to come together. You cant tell me studs like Trent Harris, AQM, CThomas, DOwens, and Moten arent perfect pieces for this system. Lets pray on a nightly basis to whatever God you choose that Michael Wyche is a stud. If he is then watch the ***** out for this defense the next two years.

And btw, I am predicting now that in 2 years when Wyche leaves that Courtel Jenkins (after being in the weight room and in the system for 2-3 years) will be the savior we have been waiting for at NG and get this defense to the level it use to be back in the day. Everything I have read and seen from this kid says he has that "it" factor we need.

I haven't read through this whole thread, so I'm not sure if this has been said, but if he's playing the same position as Chick, he'll be 1-gapping.

I've gone back and watched stat's FlashForwards and Chick is the DE in our scheme who doesn't 2-gap. The NT and the position that Pierre plays 2-gaps, but Chick doesn't.

Still, I don't expect Thomas to get as big as chick. I think 265-270 will be his max.

I'm with you on this, Jassid. Wyche is the key to the inside for the next two years, Jenkins after that. We have some depth to build at LB, as well. But the 2-deep at DB, starting LBs, 2-deep at DE and 3-Tech DT are all looking pretty sound. Just need that 0/1 Tech DT and a little more depth. We've lost our trust. But Golden is no dumb-***. We should EXPECT him to unleash the hounds now that we have talent on the field.
