Message from CanesReign:
G-d bless the likely misbegotten AbleCane, a wonderfully and uniquely daft fellow. When I would go periods without posting on grassy/Canestime, he used to request my input there as well. (I long ago discontinued my membership there.)
You can let him know that I actually lurk at times on Canesinsight, but haven't posted. I still follow both recruiting and Canes football with zeal, but no longer spend the hours necessary to be sufficiently up-to-date to inject pithy commentary.
I think it's a worthy site, with a number of posters who provide insightful information. At some point, I may decide to post again, but I'm not sure when.
As for the season, I'm cautiously optimistic. We should be vastly improved, though it remains to be seen whether we're now sufficiently mature to beat either or both the Crocs and Noles. I understand we're a 2-point 'dog to UF at the moment, and I expect the Noles to be approximately a touchdown favorite over us. Those spreads seem about right. If we play well, we could conceivably win both (an ineffably intoxicating prospect). Frankly, for the first time in years, I'm actually nervous going into a season, because I think we could shock people this year. That of course would depend largely on Morris having a stupendous year--which is conceivable, since we have a bevy of talented WRs, plus a solid OL and a transcendent RB in Duke to complement him. Let's hope Coley can pick up where Fisch left off. Obviously, the big question mark will be D'Onofrio's defense. It seems the DL has been shored up a bit (considerably more depth, and a full season from Porter would work wonders), but we're still thin at LB and young at DB. A lot of question marks there, but we should be improved from 2012 (which obviously ain't saying much).
The NCAA still scares the guano out of me. A harsh sanctions ruling could be devastating--taking the steam out of a promising year on-field and harming one or more additional recruiting classes (aside from contemplating the elephant in the room: Coach Golden's possible reaction to severe penalties). I'm clueless as to the NCAA decision. Their own malfeasance; UM's exemplary cooperation; the multiple player suspensions last year; our voluntary renunciation of 2 bowl games and the ACCCG; and the prospect of a UM lawsuit if we perceive the penalties as being too harsh should all militate toward little more than a wrist slap from the NCAA. However, I remain concerned about the insane publicity accompanying the salacious Yahoo! article together with additional revelations eagerly embraced and disseminated by an over-eager press; as we all know, the NCAA is keenly attuned to how it is perceived as an institution, and they may feel they have to hit us hard to obviate public scorn.
I surely hope not; the length and breadth of this investigation alone--in and of itself--has been debilitating and toxic to our program. While I still fear possible NCAA vindictiveness, I'm hoping we can somehow emerge with the loss of no more than 2-3 scholarships a year for 2-3 years; no additional bowl game bans; and several years of probation. (Of course, that may be pie-in-the-sky wishfulness).
One cautionary note: though we're more experienced, bigger and faster than last year's team, we're still young. Example: of the 14 UM scholarship players with single-digit uniform numbers (generally our best "skill position" players [not enamored of that term, but . . .] ), one is a senior (Hurns); one a junior (Dorsett); and 12 are freshmen or sophomores. Clearly, we're still young.
In any case, I'm looking forward to this season. We obviously could create massive buzz early by winning on September 7. I anticipate davening a bit more fervently in shul on Rosh Hashanah in two weeks. (As an aside, Clemson beating UGA would also be sweet--peeling away, layer by layer, that aura of invincibility of the SEC.)
Go Canes.
Feel free to share this with AbleCane, and have it posted on Canesinsight, if you're inclined.
Best,
