What I never understand is that worse teams play Clemson close and then we just get whooped.

Do they coast against those teams and turn it up against us?

Clemson always turn up when there’s hype. They almost seems to get bored with ACC competition so when media hype up their opponent, they get loose.
Some playoffs teams are making the same mistake by analyzing the Clemsons game when they actually didn’t give a F*** and thinking that’s who they are. Then the real Clemson show up and smack them in the mouth.
