If we're calling the right play, but players aren't executing (which is rarely the case) then the answer is simple - make the D simpler and let our superior athletes just flow to the ball.

Usually the case is that the D is misaligned and asked to cover acres of space AFTER sitting there for a beat reacting to the O.

I may be wrong but it seems they pick their gaps to hit instead of having assigned gaps. Thus, having then further back allows them to pick and choose. That's my only guess.
