Canes still leading the nation in TFL

Does this really surprise any of us? The old scheme was wait until the opponent runs a play like it was practice, and catch up with them downfield. I think everyone knew that an aggressive approach would turn it around.

Even with losing as many guys as we did, I think everyone expected improvement on defense. But 105th to 1st? That's nuts and deserves a ton of respect.

I can buy into a process when I see results. I had no idea what our defensive rankings were... obviously I had an idea we were up there in tfl and sacks but outside of that I had no idea. You can just see how the defense changes the game this year regardless of yards we give up. It's a great thing to know we got better in all of those categories as well.

This is what we were all talking about when Golden wanted to claim that top 15 defensive ranking.. you would have never known they were ranked that high. They didn't do anything to change the game. This defense, ranked outside the top 15 (I probably would have guess we were ranked in the 40s without looking), has a much bigger impact than that "top 15" defense from a few years ago

Too bad Richt chit the bed on offense.

There have been stretches in games where constant 3 and outs have really hurt the defense, that needs to be considered when evaluating the defense this year.

As has been said they have been outstanding and coaching looks very promising on that side of the ball.

But yet posters on this site sh*tted on him when he was hired. Diaz is legit

It was mainly that Golden showers guy who was begging for Aranda or Brown.

Chise was in wait and see mode; but he has so many **** groupies it makes it seem like the board was against the hire.

He was bashing the **** out of the hire as well. Another dude that had a hard on for Aranda and wasn't shy about how ****** the Diaz hire was.

Defense has been much improved but still need to improve the pass rush. We don't consistently get pressure with 4 man rushes.

No worries mate, if we win out we finish 8-4 and we only had to pay another $3mil to have the same record as last year.

Not the only improvement. Run defense is 39th was 103rd last year. Pass D went from 43rd to 38th and sacks went from 64th to 18th. Total defense went from 70th to 24th.

Makes our 6-4 record that much more disgusting. Those defensive numbers are too **** good all the way around for 6-4.

Remember that our offense needs to get rid of the Golden stench and learn to win. Miraculously, the defense wasn't affected by Golden at all.

He's done the best job of any coordinator at Miami since probably the 80s.

Easy there tiger. The early 90's were some of the nastiest D's we ever had and Greg Schiano did a great job too. That being said, I do think Diaz has done the best job since Schiano.

Huh? So our Offensive woes are Golden's fault but that ****** D from last year can improve that dramatically? This is on Richt.

Coach Kool is a priceless asset

we'll need money bags to throw at him after the year. So many teams will want him eventually. IMO he's the only assistant you pay whatever it takes to keep him... sidenote, somebody show this stat to DJ Johnson

Yeah I wonder what Kool will do over time. Seemed like he would've been a Mizzou lifer. What's his ties here? Does he want a DC job?

Similarly with Diaz. I hope we get at least 3 years out of him, but you know he wants to HC despite the "Buh he's a Miami boy" crowd.

This has been a HUGE factor in the overall improvement of the D.. too bad we can't put up points.

we woulda scored enough points to beat least UNC and FSU had we had no penalty on Walton TD run and refs overturn the UNC TD

We lost the following starters/key rotation players:

Scoring D: 77th ––> 13th
Sacks: 70th ––> 16th
TFLs: 105th ––> 1st
YPP: 92nd ––> 19th
Here are the primary ones I care about, and the combination tells a really nice story so far. Most know I've been a big zone blitz guy (and therefore a Manny supporter) for years, though slowly moved away from TOO MUCH fire zone.

My biggest concern with Coach Diaz was if he'd be willing to mix insane blitzing with timing more conservative playcalls. So far, his playcalling has been pretty nice. When you consider he's played with 3-4 True Frosh at a time, it'll be interesting to see what happens next.

Technically, aren't many of the best players on both sides of the ball guys that didn't play as much for Golden?

And there are more of those guys on D than there are on O.

So, it actually makes sense that the D would have an easier time converting to the new staff and scheme.

Kudos to Manny for making it happen, though! Definitely the right hire for this D.
