Can the D stop the Lateral Pass this year?

Last year during the Maryland game I counted 5 lateral passes in a row. Each time the corner had a 10 yard cushion.
I believe that pass was used 15 times in the 1st half alone.

As long as we don't have a running back and former Wake Forest back up at CB, we roll...and we back.

Coach D likes to play that soft zone, and i wouldnt expect much different with these young CBs

Ghost, I think that ten yard cushion was because our corners had the same talent as me, and they didn't have much choice.

I suspect, but I am anxious to see how our NEW, IMPROVED corners play this Saturday.

If our corners continue giving that much cushion, expect more of the same.

No consistent pass rush coupled with off coverages typically doesnt bode well defensively.

I agree with UMFarArcher. Coach D is on record of saying with the kids he had the objective was to keep the ball in front of them and not give up explosive plays. He also said that he can do so much more this year with the defense he has. So I would expect to see some press coverage from time to time but maybe 5 to 7 cushions instead of 10 to 14 yards. Yes 14 yards is what they played off sometimes last year...I nearly had a few conniptions.

its the TE that always worries me and has worried me for many years. our DB's will be improved but can our lb's actually pick up a TE and cover them? that has been one of our glaring weak points since i cant remember

THIS!!!!

Still gives me nitemares. I sure hope we worked hard on this.

Good news is Golden has stated numerous times they'd like to press at the LOS.
They know what they got with Howard and company. Just give it time.

I'm not completely against us sticking with some zone this year... but by next year and years after I think we'll see much more aggressive secondary play.

That and the VT game made me smh in disbelief. I don't ever remember seeing anything like our secondary play last yr...except maybe that BC QB who couldn't throw a pass.

No QB pressure and we won't have much choice, though I think we will he better at the corners this year.

As good as perryman is, he was burnt alot in coverage last year.

I just want to see someone...DE's, LB's, or both get their **** hands on the TE's in the first three to four yards of their route. That's how you disrupt them, you don't necessarily have to be great in coverage. Once the timing of their route is knocked off, the odds of them making a play go way down. With that said, if we don't get pressure on the QB, none of that really matters. In addition, we need DB's that aren't afraid to take kill shots on TE's. To me, it's all about disruption and making TE's have to think about three levels of defense. It gives other defenders enough time to recognize the TE's route and swivel back into position after seeing play-action. TE's with a free release and no fear of disruption are exponentially more difficult to contain.

If our corners are 10 yards off the LOS in the first series................ we ain't skating.

And then some.

If so, the season is basically fin. Playing ten yards off BC means we can't cover the slowest team on the planet with no QB. 5-7, last in the ACC, all the glory we have come to expect from the Shalala years if we are playing ten yards off BC.

Last I read, McGee has been more physical. Maybe the light has gone on for him finally, but with him, Gunter, and Howard, that's three CB's that should all be able to play press coverage. It should at least give D'Onofrio some options. There was no way he could press last year.

Nobody should expect our defense to play lights out this year. If we can improve from last year, great. But we are still missing some pieces.

no team can win 10 yards off the LOS. when the gayturds played the butteyes *'s secondary played ten yards off the whole game and was picked apart by chris leak
