Via Porter:
One promising offensive lineman returned on Wednesday, the first day of full-pads ‘Canes camp.
Freshman Sunny Odogwu, a 6-foot-8, 320-pound right tackle and native of Nigeria, was a full participant in drills. Odogwu, dealing with a foot issue, donned a white (offensive reserve) jersey after wearing a yellow (limited contact) shirt for the previous two days. He matched up against fellow giant Seantrel Henderson (6-8, 330) in drills at the beginning of practice.
Other OL update: backup guard Danny Isidora, a highly regarded redshirt freshman, remains out of practice with a foot issue. He is expected to see a specialist today. Golden also said redshirt freshman Taylor Gadbois, a reserve tackle, was fine. On Tuesday, Gadbois, in obvious pain, held his right arm and was checked out by a trainer after he finished a one-on-one drill.
Miami’s captains, quarterback Stephen Morris and defensive end Shayon Green, were held out of practice, which is not unusual. “We’re going to pull back on Stephen’s arm today,” coach Al Golden said. Morris and and Green wore ballcaps and appeared to be helping coaches run drills at the start of practice.
* Junior Ryan Williams would take first-team reps in Morris’ absence, Golden said. Not a surprise given his experience, but Williams appears to be solidly ahead of redshirt freshman Gray Crow and true freshman Kevin Olsen in the backup QB battle. “Ryan’s smart,” Golden said. “What he’s doing much better than he did last year is staying in the pocket and throwing with velocity.”
* Junior outside linebacker Thurston Armbrister had on a black jersey (defensive starter) for the second day in a row. True freshman Alex Figueroa, who entered camp as a starter, was again relegated to the second team. Senior Jimmy Gaines (MLB) and junior Denzel Perryman appear to have the other spots locked down. Golden has said he’s looking for the three best linebackers to start, regardless of natural position.
* Receiver Malcolm Lewis got the day off as he recovers from last season’s ankle injury. “It’s been a good four days for him,” Golden said. “He’s been fully integrated. It’s my decision to rest him.”
* Sophomore defensive end Anthony Chickillo, who has a foot injury, was in yellow for the second day in a row.
* Freshman corner Corn Elder, who has a hamstring issue, upgraded from red (no-contact) to yellow. Deon Bush (sports hernia surgery) remained in red.
* No player available to the media made much of a big deal about practicing in full pads. Neither did Golden. “We really don’t practice a lot different in full pads than we do without,” he said. “We don’t take guys to the ground. We do a little in short-yardage and goal-line situations, because there’s really no other way. But other than that, we don’t change anything.”
