C Tanner Smith commits to Miami

The Oregon State fans loved this kid’s glove and they’ve seen some pretty good catchers.

We have to see how it plays out, and I get the overall skepticism with everything, but this is a kid the staff is very excited about internally as an upgrade.

For all the talk about the PAC-12, Smith hit way better than Scanlon in that league. His 17% walk rate helps make up for some contact deficiencies.

He leaves a lot to be desired. Jack provided us w/ another bat, Tanner is a career **** poor hitter w/ little pop. The only thing he may provide is defense, although I can unequivocally tell u the speed in the ACC dwarfs PAC-12 speed which is why both Oregon St & Oregon were ushered out the NCAAT expeditiously. I call this portal pick up a C; it’s a D- for batting & a B for defense.
Add it to the long list of C pickups

Yeah; I know he comes from a traditional power program, but he’s one of their worst prospects, & did not get better over time. He has a 1:9 walk ratio/AB but an approx.1:4 strikeout ratio/AB.
A long list of C pickups for a team that wasn’t even close to a tournament team last year…. Just wild to me

I only ask you this and put you on the spot because this is the 2nd time in this thread you mention the staff really likes this kid as a form to make us feel better about it.

What has this staff done to give you any sort of confidence that they know what they're doing? Do you believe this staff will ultimately be successful and take us where we want to go?

Further to that, @DMoney, we all appreciate the added coverage, but this has been a fairly esoteric (and misery loves company) chat board for the last few years.

So, if you really feel things are moving in the right direction, great. But, if not, please don't get our hopes up.

I don’t have ties to anyone on the staff and I saw the same disastrous season you did. I get the skepticism.

But they watched our catchers last year and believe this is an upgrade. This isn’t just a desperation fill in. This is someone they aggressively targeted (in lieu of more offensive-minded catchers) because we were so bad last year. We just went from well below-average defensively at catcher to plus.

Hopefully, Smith can make the same offensive jump Scanlon made from the same league.

I’d be much more excited if this was catcher number 2/late inning replacement. He’s good but the PaC12 isn’t/wasnt known as a running Conference anyway.

Without including freshman I don’t see how this team is any better unless we land 3-4 higher ends arms and 1-2 bigger bats still. Because you cant expect to have 3-4 Cuvets in each class mashing. You don’t want a staff full of 18yr olds throwing in the ACC.

Right now I’d even venture to say this team will be bottom 3 in the ACC. But let’s see what the next 2-3 weeks bring. Fingers crossed.

The job is incomplete. They are still pursuing impact arms and up-the-middle bats. There is also a solid additional bat with multiple years of eligibility that has yet to be announced.

We are such a joke of a program I don’t even know what to say at this point.

“Attacking the portal aggressively with a plan”

🤣 would love to see that plan in writing holy ****.

Do we have legit traction or interest from any impact arms?

I think you and @Rellyrell need to bring it down on notch on this particular take. This staff took a lot of dudes like Scanlon and turned them into dependable hitters.

Let them work with this kid. He’s already coming over with more production than Scanlon did and if he could match what Scanlon did with his fielding ability then it’s a clear upgrade.

Arod and Cora need to get their boy some weekend starting arms or we are in for a repeat of last year

Don’t worry, JD has “the plan”.
I have been impatient as anyone out there regarding the tearing down and rebuilding of the roster. A lot will be happening between now and after the draft with player movement.
We have to let this play out until mid July and see how the roster takes shape. If not we will all lose our minds.

I'm not going to get my hopes up, but I wonder how much our season projection changes with some of our commits choosing to come here instead of the draft, one of either Rafe or Herick coming back, and getting a good bat like Randal Diaz.

JD was an extremely lazy and terrible hire. Did u expect anything great? Just hope if Miami has another terrible year they will dump him and actually look for a real quality guy to lead the program
