By The Numbers (Miami Baseball Post JD as 03/11/2025)

I would rather follow the Clemson and FSU model for baseball.

HIRE PROVEN EXPERIENCED WINNERS. It doesn't have to be hard. I am not sure why Rad or the powers to be (big money boosters) insist on rolling the dice with all these hires.

It makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Proven winners almost guarantee some level of success.
This. I laughed yesterday when they texted and emailed me pushing Jai Lucas, who may or may not turn out to be perfectly fine as a hire, as the reason to renew my season tickets.

There are 2 different models we could follow. FSU went out and hired an alum who had proven himself at prior schools as a head coach, including managing some very legit ND teams. We all knew Link was very legitz The other route is going after a stud assistant, like UF did. UF hired Sully, who was essentially the bench coach at Clemson. Sully was not a UF alum, and was not coaching in the SEC. Georgia did the same thing when they hired LSU’s pitching coach. He was more of a Jai Lucas type hire - young at the time, but well respected and in demand.

We go that route, we hire a guy like Elander or Brown. If not, there are a dozen great HC among multiple conferences that are proven winners and would be massive upgrades.

Manny Arteaga was a great hire. What was the chance the process was exactly like ******* football? Manny or Mario and no other options vs. JD or Cora and no other options.

University leadership is hot garbage until proven otherwise.

Dimare waited in line and got his shot. JD waited in line and got his shot. Both failed but JD somehow worse than Gino. Are there anymore assistants out there that we feel like we owe something to and could hire? Looks like we may finally have to go outside the Morris tree and actually hire someone.

Duplicating Jai Lucas in baseball would be like hiring Josh Elander from Tennessee if that is the way Rad likes to hire. I think its even more critical in baseball to hire someone proven.
Lucas likely only got hired because Rick Berry said no and Zay Wong is still in the league.

Brown

If we truly do want to be the best in everything this is the guy. He is still relatively young and I'm sure would love to have his own program.

Now is he waiting for Corbin to step down in the next few years? Can we convince him we can do something similar if not better than what Vandy has done financially (I dont mean the exact same thing but basically funding as many full rides as possible while also dropping some NIL to make things attractive. Would love if we were setting a trend rather than playing catch up. Like updating the stadium.

Vitello was an assistant at Arkansas when Tennessee hired him.
Taylor Black an asst. at Florida
UCF Manager
Muscara, the pitching coach at Wake
Walters the Wake Manager
I started last night with my list of potential hires.
The list will increase when I come up with more names.

from 2 threads in March of 2023. It wasnt rocket science. I mean even a non baseball fan could go google top 10 programs and read a few of their coaches bio's and know a guy like this is the way to go.
Wes Johnson.
LSU v Texas last night felt like Omaha. What a great game. LSU's staff is just unreal trotting out Thatcher Hurd mid week is absurd.

If the Gino experiment truly does go south I'd go all in for Wes Johnson. That guy is pumping out pro arms everywhere he goes and did a legit job with the Twins.

Another Name I would at least call....Mike Gambino. What he has done at BC and already at PSU is pretty remarkable. Plus with ties to the mid-atlantic and northeast we could start plucking from that area even more instead of getting smacked by them when they end up at UNC, Duke, UVA and Wake and then Vandy cherry picks the best of the best.

The funny thing is, any HC option mentioned in this thread would probably have us hosting a regional just about every year. It’s very easy to stack top 10 recruiting classes every year here, that hasn’t changed.

We really hired the worst possible candidate. No semi-serious baseball program would have even had him as a candidate in their HC search.

This is going exactly how we all knew it would. Time to shift the focus to Rad.

The drop off from DiMare is pretty big, at least with DiMare we were a borderline top 25 team for his entire tenure. Right now we are the 5th best program in the state.

Dimare was dragged down by JD. Probably quit because he couldn't fire him
