Bubba Bolden at practice.

Interesting that usc had him playing strong safety instead of free which is perfect us since gurvan Hall seems to have locked down that free safety spot while strong safety is a little unsettled
Hall seems like a SS all the way to me. Maybe he was just at FS because guys like knowles and carter are also better suited at SS.

I’d put Bubba at FS (assuming he is good enough to win a starting job) and Hall at SS. But I’ll defer to resident safety expert, @LuCane

If Diaz holds true to his word, it will be hard for Bolden to break into the starting lineup for UF. Testing, physical, concussion stuff and enrolling all today... then a couple days of non-contact... by then Diaz will have UF starters set. He said this Saturday and Bolden can't even hit on Saturday. I expect to see him from UNC on. Tough we got him 2 weeks into camp but I understand he had to finish his AA. Holding out hope he plays against UF though.

Derrick Smith keeps flying under the radar 'round here

Definitely a kid to keep an eye on. Manny has glowed about him since he signed. But so far Smith's best performance came in last Saturday's scrimmage. I think if Banda were glowing about him as much as Hall, people would be more excited. We need more validation.

Bolden is definitely a more known talent. 59th best rated recruit in the country, #7 safety in class of 2017. Won the starting role as USC in 2018 before the crazy suspension incident. Tweets out his off-seasn workouts that would make Al Blades proud. ... There's a reason why I am excited about him.

Look at these highlights from Bishop Gorman. It's not a criticism of D Smtih to be looking forward to seeing Bubba on the field in O&G:

This will be the deepest we have been at safety in years for sure

Ha. Not even close to an expert. But, do love the position and everything it requires. Especially in modern football.

In Diaz's system, there's been considerable overlap of Safety responsibilities - rolling the Safeties, 2-Read coverages, etc.

A guy like Jamal Carter likely makes sense to most as a traditional in-the-box SS, but played some deep Centerfield here his senior year when we'd blitz heavily on the front and required minimal steps. Jaquan wasn't considered a traditional big range Safety, but played in robber coverages here to take advantage of his instincts (hey, UVA pick-6). Redwine was placed side by side with Jaquan in quarters coverages and 2-Read coverages (where Safeties have a **** ton of responsibility given our fronts). Both were forced to play inside WRs, too.

In other words, while it applies to some coverages, don't get too caught up in traditional notions of FS and SS with our current personnel and depth chart. We need guys who have good feet, cover ground (angles), tackle well in space and, ideally, can match up with an inside WR who'll release upfield (Redwine made a tremendous leap in this from Jr to Sr year). It also helps if you have a knack for blitzing (like Carter), as we've had a number of different DB blitz packages.

To me, the key is Hall. We need at least one guy to step way up. The rest have different skill sets that can fit into different situations and coverages. Derrick Smith is someone I was excited about going into last season and ended up with egg on my face when Finley kept him off the field. He changes direction well and I think he can do some of the things Redwine showed. Excited as heck to watch Bolden, too.

Good post. In general, football defenses are becoming more positionless, like the NBA. Need versatile guys who can defend RPO and whatnot.

While Hall’s 2 picks in practice have looked fairly pedestrian from a highlight perspective, they at least show he has the instincts to be in the correct position. Admittedly I haven’t watched his HS film since he committed, but I remembered him as a hard hitter. Not necessarily an in the box type safety, but he didn’t jump off the page as rangy either. Hence my comment about him at SS and potentially Bolden at FS.

From a skill set perspective, I don’t think we have a guy like Bolden on our roster. I think he is the rangiest safety we have the minute he stepped on campus. Good feet and ball skills. Clay Helton raved about how he, as a true freshman, was able to pick up the defense and understand where to be at all times. He seems like a natural FS to me, whereas the rest of the guys look like SS/hybrid types. Bolden looks like our first true center fielder in some time.

The rest of the guys I like better at striker, tbh. I don’t love the way they play in space. Knowles is probably the truest safety of the group, but he unfortunately stinks. Bad instincts, bad angles, can’t tackle in space. To me, Carter can spell you at safety like he did last year, but is a better natural fit at striker. Smith can be an asset if he takes a step forward.

We gotta tempter our expectations with this one. Not only has he not played football in a long time but he also hasnt been part of a major strength and conditioning program in a while. He looks as thin or thinner as he did in high school. I dont think he plays till mid-late season. He is really gifted but one has to expect that it will take him a while to get back.

On the other hand props to our staff for getting everyone in. We had multiple guys with academic concerns and they are all on the roster now. I think this has been a huge plus since Richt came. We havent had a guy not make it to campus in a while and that is very important.

Still, by mid-late season we could be on to something with so many talented freshmen getting burn, Lingard, Nesta, Hill and Bolden coming to form. Mix that with the fact the offense being in its first year and should improve mightily by the end of its first season. Man if we beat Florida its on

It won’t even be mid season. In weeks only a few games will be played, remember we also have 2 bye weeks within the first 4 games of the season.
