BREAKING: Coach Larranaga to step down as head coach of Canes Hoops

We had some very good years, but our program is a train wreck right now. Our performance on the court and L's coaching has been awful these last 2 years. What should have been a springboard for continued success has been far from that.

The NIL transfers saved him for our final 8 and final 4 runs. Without it we would probably be looking at 7 losing seasons in a row.

When we hired L we were coming off of 20 and 21 win seasons. Coach L is leaving us in shambles. I wish him the best, but it is time for him to move on.

Have you actually watched our games the last 2 years? If so, what am I missing?

Sure, Coach L elevated the program to our highest level. Right now we are absolutely awful. I believe we are worse now than before we hired him.

He did a great job with transfers. Without them we don't sniff the final 8 and final 4. He now uses transfers as an excuse.

We enrolled a top-15 recruiting class and have a very talented roster and a legacy of elite 8 appearances and a final 4 in the last 5 years.

Again, maybe 20 programs in a decade make the final four. Back to back elite 8 and final four appearances is absolutely elite… and that was all in the last 4 years and after two other sweet 16 appearances before the FBI investigation garbage.

Even in a disastrous season there were 5k+ people at the Presbyterian game. There is a commitment to basketball with resources and facilities that will help the next coach recruit and win.

It’s absolutely insane and asinine to think the program is anywhere near where Frank Haith or Perry Clark left it… and it’s actually far better than where Ham left it.

Recruiting rankings mean zero. We are what our record says we are. Right now it says we are bad.

As crazy as it is, Hard Rock is packed compared to basketball
Not when we are winning. It’s no Cameron Indoor, but when we are good, the arena is typically 75%+ full for ACC games. I can’t speak for the E8 and F4 seasons as I am no longer local, but the atmosphere during much of the 12-13 season was awesome.

My good man you’ve gone mad.

NIL didn’t exist until summer of 2021. It had literally nothing to do with the construction of our Elite 8 team. NIL did come into play with Pack (Omier transfer was not about NIL at all) but the final 4 team was driven by Wong and Miller who predated NIL.

The reason L has struggled the last 2 years and is stepping down is because his style of coaching and play is built around continuity and player development - not yearly free agency.

You can have all the opinions you want but at least get your facts right.

The next coach will inherit a load of talent - if he can keep it around.

L said 8 guys transferred from the final 4 team. I fact checked that as that sounded high

By my count, only 4 guys transferred the next season. Two of the 4 were complete bench warmers while the other two were role players

Walker
Beverly
Aire
Jovanovich

Wong and miller went pro. Omier, pack, Wooga, Casey, Joseph, robinson and Watson all returned. All of them transferred this offseason, but not immediately after the F4 run

So no, we didn't lose the core of the team immediately after the F4 run. This shows me the collapse of this program went deeper than just the new NIL era.

He was a great coach and did it without going all Louisville and Kentucky. Represented us well and I remember the locker room dancing.

Wasted research the point he was trying to make was made.

The rest of it is just ungrateful noise. To each their own.

I stand corrected. Transfers fueled our final 8 and final 4 runs.

Didn't he say 8 guys said they were going to put their name in the portal -- the first time he met with them.

Part of the answer is that Coach L is a hall of fame player development coach and the transfer eligibility rule has taken that away.

But also be open to the idea that part of the answer might relate to the name that is being floated for Coach L’s successor.

There’s never a single cause or a single answer… but take a look at the timeline and team composition.

Hmm, maybe I misheard. That would make a lot more sense. 4 guys left, plus 4 others must’ve shopped around for better NIL deals before staying. Pure speculation, but I’m willing to bet Wooga was one of them.
He was. So was Joseph. I remember specifically during fall Jim saying he had 8 guys brought it up after season ended. He also said during fall practice it was hard getting his team's attention. They were thinking more NBA than Miami basketball.
