Hey guys, for some reason I always think had "insert a coach's name here" been hired instead of Randy Shannon in 2006 where could we be now.

I think about all the missed recruits, lack of finishing games and lack of playmakers that could've made a difference the past 7 seasons.

To be honest, I thought Golden was a good hire back in 2010. He seemed like a guy that could get us to at least a BCS bowl. However, I don't think he will get us to a conference championship game.

Hindsight being 20/20, and in my opinion, of all the coaches that have been consistent on the field at a lesser school it has been Bobby Petrino.

If back in 2006 Miami hired Bobby Petrino as the head coach where do you think we would be now?

If anyone thinks Miami would be worse off at least with what we've seen on the field I'd love to hear why.

How could the defense be any worse?
How could the offense not be markedly better?

If we had hired Petrino we would have won several BCS championships and gone deep into the NFL playoffs a couple of years.

In related news: My aunt Roberta recently had an addadictome. She's now my uncle Bob.

Most coaches would have abandoned the program after the Shapiro incident, made the Miami job absolutely toxic to take, would have destroyed recruiting even more than it already was, lowered the product substantially and probably put this program back a decade where Golden was able to start to pull it back out of the toilet after three.

Dude walked into a situation so bad that he has 8 seniors this year from his first "recruiting class", the dumpster fire that Randy Shannon left on his doorstep.

To get to 9 wins last year after what the program was left in 2010 and then being blindsided by the Shapiro incident is not only pretty impressive, but a ******* miracle despite whatever defensive stats you want to pull out. We were dead in the water in August of 2011, come August of 2014 we'll be in much better shape than the program has been since probably 2005.

But yeah, rush yards allowed and stuff man.

Boulschitt. Where was Golden going? Back to Philly?

He got a major pay increase to come to Miami. He thought he could parlay this gig into the PSU job one day, and all he had to do was hold it together until someone figured out he wasn't all that when it actually came to football. Oh, he talks well, and he puts nice binder notebooks together, but the man doesn't have the instincts for football.

THAT is why he isn't HC at Penn State right now. They saw it too! ****!

I used to say that the game moved too fast for Morris. Same thing for Golden and Dorito. They can't adjust because it's all going too fast.

You want a coach who pulled Miami out of a toilet? Miami was hit three times harder than Golden has suffered, and yet Butch kept winning, and put together the greatest team in history.

Yes, maybe it was difficult for Golden. But it's nothing that hasn't been done before.

Here. At UM.

Is this D'Onofrio? Is that you, you fat-faced, chicken*******? Go back to Jersey.

For someone who like to talk to "youngsters" about the past you sure seem to forget the absolute terror in Miami that Golden was going to bold to PSU after the Paterno incident, hence the reason they gave him 4 years more on top of the 4 years he had left on his original contract.

He was primed to leave and PSU would have hired him in a nanosecond in 2011.

Comparing Butch Davis world in 1995 to Al Golden's world in 2011 is apples and orange, the entire college football world is unrecognizable.

Butch took over a team that was a touchdown away from being national champions. It took Butch 6 years to break double digit wins. Funny how you forget that too Mr. Historian.

Wasn't any terror on my end. God, if only he HAD gone to PSU. Then, they could suck, but oddly, they're looking like they're back in the hunt this year. SOB!

You like to conveniently leave a lot of things out to make some twisted, misleading statement or claim.

Our program was in absolute ruin. Players in deep siht. Assistants helping in the Pell Grant scandal. Lack of institutional control, on and on and on. 31, there were 31 scholarship reductions. Golden hasn't suffered the first damned one yet!

31 scholarship reductions compared to Golden having NONE - and Butch's worst win/loss with one, single exception - matches Golden's very best performance in 3 friggin' years.

31 scholarship reductions is 1.5 recruiting classes. As in zero for a year and a half.

There weren't too many players lining up and knocking on the door to play during those years either, genius.

To add, there is no way Golden would have built Miami back like Butch did. He doesn't have the same eye for talent. Few do...

Not even if Golden had fifty bag men. We have just gotten mighty lucky on some of our talent. Sure wasn't because of his evaluations - our good players were on everyone else's wish list as well.

On top of the nine we are going to lose to the NCAA you act as if Miami and Golden weren't dropping scholarships the last 2 years on top of it. And that the cloud of the NCAA scandal wasn't being used against Miami up until the punishment came down from the NCAA. Not to mention self imposing bowl games and an ACC Title Game along the way.

Comical.

It took Butch 6 years to get 10 wins, couldn't even do it in the first four years with Dennis Erickson's players who never finished worse than 15th. Lets see where Golden gets us in year 6 and compare.

Petrino was interviewing for other jobs months after he took an extension from Louisville. He also quit on the Falcons in the middle of the season. I wouldnt want a coach like that.

I agree. But, we already have a coach who tried for the PSU job, then when he didn't get the job he acted like his dog got hit by a truck.

To answer OP'S hypothetical we'd probably have received the death penalty this past year had we hired Petrino back in 2007.

We'd have a new head coach, thats for sure.

Only cause he would have gotten a better gig by now.

You combine a coach with the tactical X's and O's ability of a Petrino with South Florida talent and we'd be a perennial 10 win team.

I'm one of those that was praying to everything I believed in that Penn State would do us the favor and take the 2 idiots from Temple so that this inept administration would at least be tempted at the thought of hiring Petrino. He would have torn it up down here.

Not sure why so many Canes give Larry Coker a pass. Maybe some of you were really young, but the wheels came off under his tenure. Hiring Shannon just compounded a problem already in motion.

Given that Coker won a MNC and was robbed of another gives justification for his hiring.
Sure the wheels came off but the Admin acted at the right time. Only problem is as you say they replaced him with someone worse which compounded the problem.

This is what Petrino did with Arkansas. So AG better be ready otherwise Petrino will drop 70 pts on UM if possible.
