blame Golden for the defense

Why is commenting on the Worst defense of all time tied to fans having unrealistic expectations? Is it unreasonable to expect our D to be better than 118th?

Last year the excuse on D was we have no corners and no consistency with personnel due to the suspensions. The D was bad last year. See FSU, VT, UVA etc.

This year is youth and lack of talent at dline. Worst defense in canes history.

Next year will be the Dline talent is too young. Keith Bryant is a freshman and so on.

When will he ever have all of the pieces in place? He won't. That is the nature of cfb. The roster is always turning over. Do we really have to wait until 2014 to evaluate this defensive scheme that still gives up hundreds of yards in the short passing game because of soft coverage? Is that talent, experience, or scheme?

Are there any signs of improvement over 1 and a half seasons?

This year, the best defense is a good offense. Need to score 40 per game or the Canes lose. Get used to it. The ND and KSU debacles were directly attributable to a lack of offensive production.

Golden's fault is he didn't recruit some jucos

Maybe but I don't think he could afford it at the time. Let's be honest, there is a reason most those kid are at the JUCO ranks in the first place. When he was hired Miami did have a major culture problem which I think he is cleaning up. But to go out and recruit a bunch of JUCOs when you are trying to build a program long term and when you already have an existing culture problem is playing with fire. This job was/is a long term fix so I agree with his strategy, most people knew this was going to take a few years and I think we are on the right path.

You actually answered your own question. You are talking about a DC with a known track record, who has faced multiple challenges in his 1+ year on the job. Poor talent, poor conditioning, poor work ethic, etc. Remember the suspensions and distractions last year? Remember that one of our starting corners was a backup at Wake Forest? How about all the early departures? Injuries?

Its ok to be disappointed, unsatisfied, unhappy, etc. Calling for coaches to get fired is unproductive. Do you really think Golden would risk his career if he thought the guy couldnt do the job?

If you want to cast blame on D'No for the defense - and many do - than, by necessity, you have to include Golden in your anger, since the buck stops with him.

I dont know. If we were putting up 3 pts per game on offense, Golden would probably have no qualms about letting Fisch go.

But the relationship between Donofrio and Golden has been described as if they were blood brothers. Practically family. That's not good for this program if Golden puts his personal relationships above the needs of the program.

A program does not work if one of the most important members of the program, the DC, has carte blanche to fail miserably and not be held accountable for it. Golden had better be telling Mark to get this defense fixed behind closed doors or start looking for another job. 118th is unacceptable at Miami no matter how young or inexperienced this defense is.

If things dont eventually improve on the D he will be getting heat believe me

Well, for one I would not get into the business of telling the future. EVERY one including AG has said this is a young team relying on guys who have not even been through ONE UTough! So yeah there may be another year of having to understand the rebuild going on. But the cb position will NEVER be as bad as is was when AG took over because he understands 'vertical depth'. Something the previous regime obviously had no understanding about.

Improvements?
DP, EJ are second yr players who have been through Utough and they are playing at a fairly high level.
Olsen Pierre? He is as well. I think we could agree we missed him this week.
The whole OLine? They have improved and look to be in great shape and we are getting young guys minutes as well.
McGee? I think he is playing better than most thought he had in him.
Shayon Green? He is actually healthy, I think this staff deserves credit for that alone! lol But he is ok.
Finnie? I think he is playing at a high level, definitely not as consistent as he needs to be but improving.

Yeah there is not the statistical improvements your looking for but there are player improvements happening all over the field that will eventually lead to statistical improvement. These are young guys who are improving but also still making mistakes. There is also basically ZERO senior leadership on the defense. Just wait until DP hits yeah two in the MLB spot. He will only get better. All of these freshman are playing at a high level for being freshman. Give them a yr, or OMG two?, to get stronger in the program. I mean how can you guys watch the raising cane videos and actually feel like we have in incompetent staff? These guys have a plan and have a very close hand on this program. Probably the most organized staff I have seen. Of course I was not this in touch with the older staffs, just watched games, but we al know what the last couple of staffs were like and we all KNOW this is a HUGE upgrade.

I think Golden and D'onofrio are being overly ambitious when maybe they don't really need too.
Make no mistake, if and that's a big IF, we get the right players for the 3-4 Hybrid scheme that they are trying to implement AND those said players can grasp the complexities of the scheme in the limited amount of time they have (unlike NFL players) this defense will be SICK and will make BAMA's look like Pop Warner. It would be the GOAT hands down. Talent plus that SCHEME would be Unmatched.
If that is what everyone wants than they are going to have to be patient and trusting in Golden gets the right players, physically and intellectually.

Now the question is do we really need to attempt to build this type of Monstrous defense to win MNCs? I don't think so.
With competent coaching, player development and recruiting we should field top 20 defenses by default running a 4-3 one gap scheme.
If recruiting is off the charts TOP 5 defenses would be the norm.

But it seems Golden is swinging for the fences with his plan for his 3-4 hybrid defense. It could either be brilliant or his undoing here. Time will tell.

+1000 but how long are we willing to wait?

I think that, it you think the way you expect a guy like Golden to think, he believes in swinging the fences. One of the benefits of being in our current situation is that the staff has time to build the program the way they want. Golden has given no indications that he wants to be elsewhere. I don't know the guy but most high achievers want to build something better than just "good." If Golden is a winner, which he appears to be, it probably pains him to see the D play so poorly. I would bet he's more emotionally engaged than any of us. But he's probably willing to take the pain in order to see this program becoming what he expects to be.

It just amazes me how many times I see people mix the different type of intelligence that's needed to be successful in football. Look, the dumb *** idiotic country *** mofos in Alabama are no smarter than the dumb *** thug idiots in South Florida. If we've got a good coach, miraculously these same kids that people question if they are smart enough to grasp things will be shining on the **** football field while watching our head coach raise up title trophies. I am in no way worried about us getting kids that can grasp things, but instead, I'm just worried about us having a coaching staff that can get the job done. Referencing that immortal scene in the Wire, when we have a staff that makes kids believe that "when the count be wrong they'll **** em up" everything else will fall into place. lol
