Can we stop acting like Mark D'Onofrio has carte blanche on defense?

It's like blaming Mike Stoops for the scheme that OU runs.

Golden has his fingerprints all over the defense. You think he hasn't signed off on what we're seeing?

Look, I'm willing to give these guys time to do their thing. If they can send guys to the NFL from Temple, they can develop players here.

Yep, not sure why 90% of the posters don't understand this.

I'm sure deep down they do understand this, and people have been critical of Golden's blind support of Onofrio, I for one like his overall leadership of the program, however, the defense is a mess and needs to be tweaked.

Very true. I think most lay the balme at D'No cause we all like Golden. And the sheer idea that our Head Coach would sign off on a defense that all of us think is so ****** makes us reject the thought. So everyone just blames D'No. Maybe D'No has final say in what the defense does on game day, but the overall scheme belongs to Golden.

I don't give a **** if Sebastian is in charge of it, whoever it is needs to be given a viking burial while still alive following the season.

One thing I blame on Golden is the physical conditioning of the big men on the team. He conditioned those guys to win 12pm games at sunlight stadium in 90 degree weather! Most of our big men on the both lines of scrimmage have lost alot of weight. D.Smith would be better at 360 than at his present weight. Our Dline seems to sub every other series anyway, no need for them to be marathon runners. When you look at our dline and oline they look like body builders, compared to the top teams in America. lol.

When it comes down to it, you have to get these boys ready to play the big boys at night to win the big games! Notre Dame just wore us out physically with big fat boys who brought the wood for 4 quarters. Mcdermott, Linder, and Feliciano all lost weight, and now they can't push nobody off the ball to establish our running game. Yeah they can pass block, But they got straight handled against K.State and Notre Dame due to their lack of size. When you lose weight you also lose Muscles!!

So your saying you want "fatter" lineman as opposed to more muscular?

After you lose the way you lose against ND, many lose any iota of rational thought, and you get remarks like this.

Lets looks at reality, lets say we have an all together different scheme with the same personnel, lets say a very aggressive one where we press our corners and blitz 5 to 7 all the time. The result would be about the same, accept that every once in a while we would get a turnover and opposing teams probably would score more cause they would score faster. We would have lost to ND not 41-3, but rather 56-21 or something like that. Then we would hear how terrible the scheme is and that we have to play with more discipline and play more bend but dont break defense. We would need to do something to prevent the big play .

Dude, i was at the notre dame game, they had a nose tackle that was fat as **** at about 360, and he straight kicked Mcdermott's *** every play. When you lose a bunch of weight you also lose muscle! All i'm saying is that when it comes to playing the big boys you need to be a BIG BOY yourself. WE GOT MANHANDLED!! They had a dline front of two de's who weighed 305 and a nose that weighed about 360!!!

Nobody wants to hear this but if there was one area of concern for McDermont it was always his strength so in this is not the best example. Also I was at the game right on the 50 yd line and while there is no doubt that our DL got manhandled, but our OL manhandled their DL. The run blocking could have been better, but we were pushing them back in pass protection. At the end of the day when you have a kid that is 360, more often than not that will be a bunch of bad weight and while they maybe strong on one play, more often than not they wont have the conditioning to play as many snaps as they should.

When you watch a game and watch our LBs stand there while a TE or receiver runs past them to an open spot and they have no reaction to it, I blame:

I was so excited to get away from bland Randy's defense only to be punished by another uninspiring easy to scheme against abomination of a defense. The more I talk about it the more freakn annoyed I get.

on a board that is home to nites, duck, toad, gordonsollie, blackvern, and slash, this might be the dumbest ******* thing i have ever read here.

this ***** is seriously asking for our players to be more out of shape.

i'm not saying that i want our guys to be out of shape. i just don't see the point in getting our dline to drop a bunch a of weight when our scheme requires them to be able to hold their ground and control their gap on each play. d.smith and others don't require a double team and are constantly being driven back. the dline of notre dame controlled their gaps completely all game. Mcdermott required help on every play to block their nose tackle (who had a bunch of bad weight on him), that's why we couldn't run the ball. we had to use 4 or 5 offensive lineman to block their three dlineman, that made it easy for their linebackers to make plays.

we play and rotate 6 dtackles each game. on third and long we sometimes move chick to a tackle spot. their is absolutely no need to get our dtackles thin. our scheme does not require them to get up field to cause havoc in our opponents backfield. the theory behind the 3-4 and this 4-3 we run is to have big boys control the line of scrimmage/gap and demand double teams while the linebackers make the tackles.

do you really think a dtackle that goes from 360 to 313 has the same strength? yeah he is in much better shape, but is he more capable of controlling the line of scrimmage? i say no!

When you have unrealistic expectations, you are then disappointed. For your own sanity, and frankly mine, stop the whining. Anything over 6-6 this year is great, and we are headed that way.
