Bishop Gorman Star Tight End Elija Lofton Commits to Miami Hurricanes

Someone mentioned Jason Geathers as a comp and I think that is way more accurate than Brevin Jordan. I think Geathers was before his time and never found a real footing in the offense (“imaginative” was not our MO during his tenure and Devin Hester is another one we failed to use properly in that era).

I’d LOVE to see what Dawson can do with Lofton in this offense. I think he can line up at three different positions and give DC’s fits, especially in the red zone.
Look at what he did at Bishop Gorman last year ... lined up at RB 10 times ... 102 yards and 7 TD's. HS receiving for 2 seasons .... 52/1263 for 24.3 yards per catch average and 19 TD's.

52 rec 1263 yds 19Tds in 2 seasons for a high school athlete from a national power like Gorman is enough for me. Mind you he is also an effort kid with weight room numbers that will rival some guys already on campus. He can be a real mismatch for teams if our OC has his head on straight!!!

From @Geo305 recruiting space. No one really is discussing the potential ripple effects of this commitment.

West Coast Recruits

  • Commitment is huge, Elija part of West Coast visitors group. Dylan Williams, Papa Afua, Brandon Baker, TA Cunninngham, Aylen Breland all going to be impacted by this commit
  • All part of a group that visited schools together
  • Miami is going to get the BULK of their elite recruits from the West Coast. Keep an eye on them

If you have a chance you need to watch / listen to the Josh Pate / Shannon Dawson interview. Really like how Dawson talks about his offense and his responsibility to prepare the QB's to run it. HUGE emphasis on WR's going vertical and on WR's being physical, blocking, and running complete routes even if they aren't the primary. Looking forward to see his offense on the field and based on what I am hearing from him... hope he is here for a few years to be a blessing to work with the elite guys coming in. Should be exciting and productive.

The Hurricanes have secured the commitment of one of the most versatile high school football prospects in the country, tight end Elija Lofton. The Las Vegas native announced his commitment to the University of Miami on a live stream via 247Sports, choosing the Canes over other finalists including Arizona State, Texas, Hawaii, and Washington.

Lofton, a dynamic player from Bishop Gorman High School, is the #13 ranked tight end in the nation and the #242 overall player in the country according to 247Sports. He shares an alma mater with former Miami tight end and current Houston Texans' player, Brevin Jordan.

What sets Lofton apart is his multifaceted skill set. The Canes coaches regard him as one of the best "football players" in the country. His ability to line up as a wide receiver, running back, or tight end, coupled with his potential to play as a linebacker, makes Lofton a rare talent.

Lofton showcased his scoring prowess last December in a game against Chaminade-Madonna, where he scored a staggering five touchdowns. It is this unique versatility and scoring ability that has led the Miami coaching staff to believe that Lofton could be a game-changing recruit for the Hurricanes. Given his skill set, Lofton could be a dominant force in the ACC, bringing new energy and dynamism to the Canes' offense.

Won't get alot of love for this comp but agreed. This kid is undersized but not lacking in ability. Seems like he can do all the dirty work in split zone and gap schemes but also a weapon in the RPO game. Will Mallory caught alot of passes off of split zone, flat concepts from IZ. This kid can make some plays in a similar role and almost certainly a better blocker.

Lofton to me has always seemed like the Swiss Army knife that gets called on in the 4th quarter of an important game. Nasty, reliable, multi purpose.
Reminds me of a legit football player that plays to win on offense. Hungry, wants to succeed, and will play any position necessary to keep moving the chains and put up points. Need more guys with that mind set.

It feels the same as DJ Dallas. Doesn't necessarily check all the measurable boxes, but you see an incredibly impactful football player. When you have guys who don't need to be taught to work hard, and don't need to be taught to be a competitor, you can jump right into what they need to do on the field and expect them to contribute early.

Loved his highlight tape for the stuff he did as a competitor the most, and expect him to be a great leader when it is his time here.

Nice heads up! I’m definitely going to lock In and check out that interview. Dawson has a chance to give Mario all the ammo he needs to help us build a complete roster. Simply by giving us an exciting product! Thanks for the insight.

He could as easily be categorized as ATH instead of TE. In that case, I don’t think we’d have as many skeptics.
That build, speed, and twitchiness...if he ever decided he's too short to keep playing TE, he'd be an interesting experiment at LB!

We need physicality at the WR position. This kid is reportedly already between 220-230 and quick, and aggressive. Not shy about going for the ball. Set a standard and let others match it. WR is NOT a finesse position if you play hard-nosed football. (I call him a WR since he plays multiple positions all over the field).

Definitely not saying he should switch positions. Point is with his traits he has potential in various positions, so bring him in and he'll excel somewhere on the field even if it might not be at his current TE position.
