Didn't realize they were 35-3. The seeding this year was odd to say the least.
It's tough with how disparate the schedules are in CBB.
They lost to Ole Miss, a 12-21 program by 13. I believe that was their only game against a Power-5 program, even though it was against a really bad Power-5 program, and they blew it.
They lost to UAB, an NIT team, by 9.
They lost to Middle Tennessee State, a 19-14 team who didn't make the post-season, by 9.
Pick any solid program, let's say any of the 4-6 seeds, and tell me how you think they do against that schedule. How would Miami do? Most good programs would run/nearly run the table if healthy. And to FAU's credit, they won a ton of games.
But those are three bad losses. And they really didn't have a signature win to nullify it. They beat up on patsies. Seeding is hard. The only thing I love about the NCAA's is that if you upset a team, you basically take over their lower seeding as their path becomes your path. So nearly every legit team has a chance to make a run.
It might be a rare sight to see a 30-plus win team with a nine seed, but the overall level of competition in their schedule is a factor. Even though FAU will move to the AAC next season, Conference USA isn’t very respected. Their schedule was very, very weak. FAU was 2-1 in Quad 1 games, and 4-2 in Quad 2, but the Owls were 23-0 in Quad 3 and 4. So most of the wins carry less weight since they weren’t against “quality teams.”
