I have read a lot of scuttlebutt about Bain playing out of position and that he need to move to DT. This is based on the following:
1. He is having a down year. Is that accurate? He has played 6 full games. He probably should have sat against Cal, but he played. He has 3.5 sacks recorded. He had one sack erased because of a moronic facemask penalty by Baron. He also did not get credit for causing a sack against Duke for some odd reason. So at a minimum he has 5 sacks in 6 games. That is a projected 10 sacks over 12 games. This would be top 10 in the nation. Could he have played better against GT? They all could have. So stats do not support this argument.
2. He should be playing DT because that is his position in the NFL. He is not fast enough off the edge. Is that accurate? I am not so sure. I watched Brandon Graham, Eagles DE who is basically the same build as Bain, wreck the Rams last night. He did it off the edge with power and force, not speed. Routinely you see Chris Jones blow up a an OT with power and force. Trey Hendrickson leads the league in sacks. He is not a speed rusher. He is brute force with some well timed moves. So again, the argument does not hold up.
Bottom line there can be two body types at DE both in college and NFL. Bain is producing where he is and that is where he will stay.
