BAHAMAS HOOPS INVITE Friday Nov 17 (Georgia 3:30) Sunday Nov 19 (final vs KanSt 2:30)

Just want to keep us all honest here when people complain that we don’t have a slasher like Wong anymore:

Wong ‘22-23 avg’d 16 & 4 (won acc poy)

Wooga right now is avging 19 & 6

Wooga ‘22-23 avg’d 8 & 3

Bensley is avging 13, 3, 3 ast and 3 stls

Cleveland and Miller are nearly identical stats wise (Cleve is a little higher ppg right now) but Cleveland definitely has a different style.

It might not LOOK the same without Wong & Miller but again, at the same point in the season this starting 5 is better than last year’s offensively.

We may have quietly upgraded from within with Wooga and Bens taking on larger roles.

You concerned at all with our work on the boards? Wong and Miller, despite lack of size, were actually excellent rebounders. Wong got good position and had strong hands. Miller seemed to glide in and get more than his share.

Talking about hands, that's an area Bensley takes a back seat to Wong. Wong could penetrate and score inside. Bens can penetrate but ... the scoring inside off his drrives is still a work in progress. Nice jump-shooting from him though -- intermediate and long-range.

I think Cleveland is stronger on the boards than Miller. Poplar got 11 last night… an outlier but he’s still going to get more this year than last year.

I think you’re right about Wong vs. Bens but that’s probably only one rebound a game on average (Wong averaged 4.3, Bens is at 3.3).

I’m also hopeful that as Watson/Casey/Nwoko/maybe George get more comfortable they will help with rebounding. Haven’t seen that yet but rebounding is about playing with effort and confidence… so hopefully that will come.

I love wooga. He’s improved significantly. But I don’t see this what so ever and am curious to track these mock drafts as season progresses. As of November 2023 I think Poplar is back next year and Cleveland is the one that shoots up the boards and bounces

I was over the moon ecstatic when Cleveland committed and have been banging the table for months that he was one of the most impactful transfers in the nation. Nevermind going from one rival to another, we're talking about the 6th man of the year in the ACC as a freshman and FSU's leading scorer last year plugging into a lineup where he fits perfectly.

He's a potential POY candidate in the conference and a first round pick if he keeps up this level of play.

UM’s offense is tailor made for Matt Cleveland. He is great in transition, slashing/cutting and rebounding. He is not as good in a traditional 1/2 court offense like FSU runs. He absolutely will be a 1st round pick if he keeps playing like this.
What you are seeing from him now is the Matt Cleveland that I saw in high school. It was painful for me watching him play for FSU last year when he didn’t want to shoot the ball from the free throw line.
I’m hoping his season is opening the eyes of other potential transfers that come here and Coach L will get you into the draft.

19 & 6 four games into his first season as a primary scoring option.

He’s shooting 59% from three on TWENTY SEVEN attempts.

He can jump OUT of the gym…

If our season resembles anything we’re hoping for he’s a first rounder on his athleticism and shooting alone.

I'm really impressed with Cleveland. I felt that way before he stepped on the court for us and he has exceeded my expectations.

If you were watching on CBSSN,did u hear the color guy say Cleveland - when he first started practicing with the Canes - he was shooting everytime the ball touched his hands. Implication being maybe he was a selfish, non-team player. I found that hard to believe. He seems the opposite.

I was at the game so didn’t see the broadcast - but the story is that L had a sit down with Cleveland to discuss improving his offensive efficiency and asked Cleveland to emphasize moving the ball and creating for his teammates - the more the ball moves the better shots he (and everyone else) will get. Apparently Cleveland took that to heart and there was an almost overnight transformation in practice that has translated to games.

Cleveland is a really, really great kid who will do just about anything to help his team win… and a big big time competitor.

This team is better.

Wooga will give us number wise what Wong did last year and Bens will give us more than Wooga did last year.

Cleveland seems like he he is adjusting a lot faster than expected. He can’t (currently) create offensively like Miller could but he’s a better defender and rebounder imho. Hit some shots tonight too.

If Watson can step up his game… watch out.

Casey and Nwoko give us some playable frontcourt depth (balked dunk notwithstanding).

Still have some hope for George but he may be a next year guy the way things are going.
With George, it is a question of confidence right now. Has had some good looks on shots not falling.

Not like Walker or Beverly gave us anything on the boards.

K State

- Lost to Usc by 13, trailed by as much as 20 (USC -2.5)

- Beat Bellarmine by 8 (KS -16.5) for reference, Washington beat Bellarmine by 34

- Beat providence in over time (Prov -1.5) shooting 36% and Bryce Hopkins having maybe the worst game of his Providence career, 2/15 from the field

it’s really just the point guard Perry and Kaluma. Good players.

Perry scored 24 pts vs Prov but 14 came from the FT line. He was 4/11 shooting. Kaluma had 18 pts but 7 turnovers.

We should beat this team.

You could end up dead right when all is said and done. Hope so!

We weren't known last season as a tall or particularly physical team. So far, that hasn't changed. How will we fare against teams that are both those things?

I've asked this before here but -- With the clock ticking down at games' end, and us being 1 point behind, whose hands does Coach L want the ball in?

Last year, that was Wong. He had the handle and strong hands needed to drive and score in heavy traffic at the hoop, drive and likely get fouled, or drive and dish. Who is this year's Wong -- the player to go to the rack and create/make the game winning shot, or get fouled, at the buzzer?

Must be something in the South Florida water.

Our FT shooting is again off the charts good. And this goes back to Leonard Hamilton days when we were winning more than our share of those 52-51 games in the Big East.

No matter how mediocre we might have been record-wise, we always seemed to excel at the line. Gotta be coincidence but it's a great legacy I'm glad to see still being improved on. Nothing more frustrating than to lose games at the FT stripe. Memphis lost an NCAA Championship (or two?) just because they were bricklayers on FTs.

I remember Kaluma from playing for Creighton.

I'm just glad Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell (the little 5'7 guard who shone last March) are gone. Now, they were a handful!
