Atmosphere surrounding UM Football after '99

I felt like we were contenders going into '00. LOL before the season I actually called into a national sports talk radio station to make the case why Miami would win the national championship. Our talent was obvious, and the way Dorsey played down the stretch of '99, we had the right ingredients.

I think we were hoping this season was our 1999, but it doesn't look like it.

I went to the Bama-Michigan Orange Bowl game at the end of the 99 season and walked around Son Life telling everyone to look out for Miami the next year. People looked at me like I had a unicorn horn growing out of my forehead. Things seemed so bleak after we got beat by VT in 1999. If Kelly didn't go down that night maybe Dorsey never even gets a chance. If we can somehow end this season on a positive note I think next year could be our 1999 - as in four losses with a bunch of talented guys and a lot of unanswered questions.

The truth is that nobody appreciated Butch Davis until Larry Coker fell flat. Then people were FORCED to acknowledge Davis because there was no way to reconcile us building a dynasty-type team with 2 straight poor coaches. It was really the early-mid 2000s when people lost all enthusiasm for Coker that the "I hate everyone" people were forced to put Butch on a pedestal. The negativity around Golden now is nowhere near Butch after UW 2000 when they were hanging people in effigy. Golden would probably regain his approval rating at least for awhile if he just got rid of D.

When Kelly decided to play pro baseball, I was jumping for joy.

I was talking to a Canes fan off the board, and he said we won't be contenders until 2016. I was like WHAT???

His rationale was that all of the top-flight defensive line talent we're bringing in this cycle needs 2 years to mature and be ready to contribute. He has a point. We ask our d-linemen to do a lot. We're always going to need plus talent up front for this defense to work.

I don't wanna wait that long, but Al ain't getting fired unless he totally bottoms out over the next two seasons.

Either way, we should know FOR SURE if he's the right guy before 2016.

In other words, the fan base didn't appreciate the guy until after he'd gone, and he left like a thief in the night.

Nah. As mentioned, everybody was pretty high on that '00 team once they got rolling.

As we would have been on this team had they thumped VT.

SO we need Morris to go down and stay down.....I like this plan

and I agree Rok...we knew we had a special team in 99..all games were close we played hard talent was there.....leaders were merging
We have not had leaders REAL leaders in years..Duke is a cheerleader not a leader at this point...but this 13 team in no 99 team...I would bet the 97 or 98 team could beat this team at this point....

Who had the coaches to make changes and win in the end in 98? Who had already established enough team chemistry to come back from a deficit like that? Whose team played with anger and aggression, controlled rage and stopped BC's offense drive by drive in the second half? Who played with heart and discipline and didn´t look lost compared to this year's team last saturday? It was Butch Davis' team. Maybe we can comeback the next three weeks and win it all, who knows, but right now it does not look like that to me and it certainly begins with the head coach.

does this include the loss to east carolina?

It's a tough pill to swallow but it's true. We won't have the necessary talent in the front seven next year to match what would be a great secondary if they were coached well.

That loss was early in the season. A horrible loss, but the team improved dramatically as the season progressed. And that's the mark of a good team. What we're seeing is the exact opposite.

We struggled with wins against BC, pitt WVU...play the number 2 team get blown out...Kelly goes down then we get a REAL QB that only losses 2 games for the next 3 years..

what was scary then was Dorsey was clearly better in practice..yet Butch and larry played KK and we paid the price...

Dorsey was clearly a leader and better player....yet coaches chose KK...

That team lost every game against good comp that year and beat all the big east teams and OSU first game(which was kinda like the FL win they werent that good). they didnt lose their 2 best offensive players to injury, and had players drafted in the first round. apples and oranges but similar results really

The east carolina game was a short week, and they were unable to practice a lot that week, hey not everything went well that year. Ohterwise we would not have lost 3 times, but we improved, I am curious to see what this team has left in the tank.

Butch was crucified and vilified. Still is. "Botch". The champs to chumps banner.

But Butch had more positive signs to go along with bad beat downs. His teams got better as the season went on. He also had an initial staff with experienced coordinators. Coker was a grey beard who had been an OC for 15 years prior to being brought to Miami, and at places like Okie State (when Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas were there), and OU.

By comparison, Goldens first OC (age 35) was a low level assistant coach in the NFL for a few years, then a one year OC of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and then one year as a QB coach in the NFL. After he left, Golden hires an OC that never called plays before.

Butch's DC was ultimately fired, but Bill Miller had 5 years DC experience at OK State, and two years as DC at Nevada. He's not been a DC at an elite school after Butch canned him, and was the equivalent to Saban at MSU like Coley was to Jimbo.

Our staff and HC have talent. But they are all young (including AG) and inexperienced.
