Assessing this recruiting class

I'm not going to spin this into a win. Mario's stated goal is a Top 5 class, and his expectation is a Top 10 class. He believes in recruiting rankings, recruiting rankings are better than ever, and the scoreboard says 14th in the nation.

The timing also hurts. We had a devastating loss on Saturday, and Mario is supposed to make his name in recruiting. I've been told reliably that we will go hard in the Portal. This finish puts a lot of pressure on executing that plan and crushing the Class...

Very disappointing class. Mario better hit several home runs in the portal but most of our portal additions under his guidance have been mediocre, especially on defense.

We could have overpaid for guys like Stubbs, Nix, and Merit just to make it look nice on the 247 recruiting rankings website. I agree with this. It wasn’t the master plan going in, but it was the right decision at the end.

Everyone who had maybe a signing day they werent happy with is saying the same thing to relax the fan base I guess, lol.. I listened to a couple signing day reviews and it was samething, "we didnt overpay to save money for portal!" "coaches will be going HARD in portal" "dont worry we will be BIG players in portal!" From LSU, FSU, USC, etc.

Mind you that dont even count the top teams who actually had moster classes AND still will be in portal HEAVY like UO, Texas, OSU.

Good times ahead.

Recruiting and the portal go hand in hand and I’m not really a person that believes one way is better than the other all the time

I think high school recruiting should in general be the backbone with the portal complementing that but it’s not gonna happen all the time like that and that’s fine

Truth is we won’t know the answers until a year from now how this played out

The lack of high end players and really a lackluster recruiting effort for the past 6 months is tough to take but also not a deal breaker…yet

You're correct with the strategy. All Mario has to do is land impact portal players. If he doesn't, the whole thing is a disaster.

Gotta wait a few weeks before final judgement.

We are still not going to be a top tier destination especially with easy negative recruiting like Cam and Dawson leaving etc

Trying to save the day in the portal is bad business for us but the roster is in better shape in general given the 23/24 classes getting a bit older (better shape than pre-portal rosters the last few years I mean)

Exactly my point. We go 10-2 and land a # 15 class. Last year we go 7-6 or whatever and land the # 4 class in the country. Where is the sense in that?
