The Jamal Carter thread got me thinking about him. Where do you guys see him fitting in this year?

Im assuming that the staff putting him at gunner on the punt teams means that he wont redshirt. In re-watching the uf game, Antonio Crawford really struggled. Im wondering if anyone sees the possibility of Burns getting some of Crawford's reps going forward.

Thoughts?

Carter, special teams and mop-up duty. Kacy has surprised and Jenkins looks good. Not to mention Bush hasn't played (really) and Highsmith is proving decent minutes.

Crawford needs some work, he is in the rotation but he is more mature and physical then the freshman (Burns). I would say Gunter and Howard are the starters and Crawford is a backup.

Crawford was beat a few times, no doubt. But the long ball to Patten, he was in perfect position, just needed to locate the ball and he could have had the pic. His first year with extended playtime. More reps, and he'll come around. That said, Artie is way too talented to keep down for long. I believe he see the field before Hope or Dortch.

I think at least one corner besides Crawford, Howard and Gunter need to step up before FSU and possibly Clemson.

JMO but I think Crawford is going to be just fine. He's taking some lumps but he has also had some nice plays out there, not unlike Tracy last year. The secondary is very exciting

Did Hope see the field vs FAU? I know I saw Elder out there make a couple tackles.

All I know is Burns is one of the more fluid and talented cover corners I've seen in a while, so Crawford better get his act together.

I'm gonna be in the minority saying this for sure, but I think Burns jumps crawford in the depth chart within the last four games

Agreed. I was listening to Duane Starks on 560 a few weeks ago and he said the corner who impressed him the most during camp was Crawford. He's the best athlete at corner we have except for maybe Burns, he'll come around.

To be clear, my OP was not meant to degrade Antonio Crawford in any way. Im of the opinion that there are enough reps for a lot of DB's to share. That said, based on a very limited body of work, Burns seems to look more fluid (as WhatTheHell noted).

I think its also important to note that Burns still looks very thin. He needs to add some quality weight.

Burns is probably the best athlete on the defense with Deon IMO(not knocking Crawford either). His time will certainly come but again we find ourselves in a nice spot where we have some depth. I think not only should Crawford be looking out for Artie next year, but Gunter should as well. You talk about those four along with Bush/Jenkins at safety and you can't help but be excited about the future.

Double agree. Crawford has great speed and hips. He doesnt seem afraid to be physical. He just needs more reps and a better understanding of what offenses are trying to do so he can read and react quicker...that comes with experience. On that one long throw to Powell (at least I think it was Powell), Crawford wasnt in terrible position. If that ball is underthrown at all, he is tipping it away. If its overthrown by 1 -2 more yards, that ball is not being catched. It was more of a really nice pass and catch than **** poor coverage. Im actually excited about Crawford. That said...Artie has a higher ceiling and will probably jump him by next year..or as soon as Golden has confidence he wont blow a coverage in a close game.

Yeah Crawford kind of got smoked this past game and got the PI against FAU. Not a great start to the season. I'm not giving up hope on him though, I'm pretty confident he will come around and end up being a very good CB for us. He is too fluid and active not to.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Burns get some more action as the season progresses though, mostly because he is just too talented not to. Nickel back would be a nice spot for him IMO

He's our most talented corner since P-Buch. He'll steadily become more of a factor in 5 and 6 DB sets. I'd like to see Crawford moved inside at times and flip between our Zone and some man w/ Artie on the outside.

I know it was just FAU, but that play where Artie turned his head, located the ball and closed on it to swat it away was still impressive.

Whenever he fully grasps the playbook and is comfortable with the college game, I expect great things from him.

just a question, since I remember artie burns getting tons of praise as a safety as well as corner (i think by deon sanderes at a camp or maybe at UA practices or something?). does he have a better future as a lock down corner or as a safety? obviously our staff sees him as a cb and thats where he has started, so i would think that means cb. but the thought of having someone so fast and athletic with great instincts at safety to complement quality cb's makes me wonder how he would do there. with deon, rayshawn, and jamal carter, we probably need him as a lockdown corner more than a safety, but i was just curious what you guys thought
