CaneHunt ’14: OG Update | Braden Smith evaluation

3/22/13: ESPN.com Recruiting Nation has published an article, “Breaking down 2014 prospects.” Their report includes OG Braden Smith. Here’s what they had to say…

“A physically impressive kid, Smith is someone you want leading the way whether it's on a running play, off the bus or into a dark alley. He is a tall kid with a muscular lifter's build and very good upper- and lower-body strength. He's a well-put-together prospect and still young with room for some growth, but he is much closer to his physical ceiling at this stage.”

CaneHunt ’14: SDE Update | Gerald Willis III evaluation

3/22/13: ESPN.com Recruiting Nation has published an article, “Breaking down 2014 prospects.” Their report includes SDE Gerald Willis. Here’s what they had to say…

“Willis is a defensive line prospect who can bring some scheme versatility to the table. He has solid height and a thick build, especially through his lower body, and looks to have some room to fill out further. He could potentially fit as a 3-4 DE or could transition to the next level as a 4-3 end, which he plays now. But with further physical development, we feel he will likely end up sliding inside if he continues to play in a system that utilizes a four-man front.”

CaneHunt '14: ILB Update | Andrew Beck get Texas offer

3/22/13: ESPN.com is reporting that ILB Andrew Beck (Tampa, Fla./Plant) has received an offer from Texas during an unofficial visit to Austin today.

Beck and his family are from Texas, growing up outside of Fort Hood in Central Texas.

Beck has offers are from Florida State, Kentucky and Miami. Andrew feels all the schools are still on a level playing field at this time. However, it's evident the Longhorn offer is really special to him.

“It was really unbelievable. As a little kid growing up that’s what you dream of, to go into his [Mack Brown] office.”

Beck plans on making his decision on July 14 at his high school, the day before his father leaves for an Army assignment.

CaneHunt '14: RB Update | Yearby scouting report

Periodically, CaneHunt '14 will provide a scouting report on a Miami prospect. Most of these reports will be a synopsis of the original report in a media outlet. That's for legal reasons because most are behind pay walls. I will always identify my source, in case you have a subscription and would like to read the original piece. The synopis report will also be posted in CaneHunt '14, under that player.

Today's prospect is RB Joseph Yearby.

[ESPN] Joseph Yearby is an elite national running back. He plays with a high motor. Joe is incredibly explosive and elusive. Good things can happen every time he touches the ball. Yearby has elite burst speed through tight spaces, although his top end speed is slightly above average. He’s a patient runner, allowing his blocks to develop. Then he bursts. Joe has excellent vision and elite cutting ability. He rarely gets tackled in one-on-one situations. He just makes tacklers miss. Yearby has a muscular build but probably lacks the size to be an every down back in college. Joe has soft hands, which might make him an ideal and dangerous slot receiver. Yearby is made for the spread offense.

CaneHunt ’14: OT Update | Kc McDermott announces Tuesday

3/29/13: Corey Dowlar, of espn.com, reported yesterday…

“The rumors circulating Thursday morning that K.C. McDermott (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) had committed to Miami proved to be inaccurate. Well, at least for now.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Watch List offensive tackle, who is down to Notre Dame and Miami as finalists, remains undeclared for now.

"The official announcement will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the media center," said McDermott's head coach Rod Harris.

McDermott has been one of the most sought-after prospects in the state of Florida. His offer list includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USF, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin, among others.

The Hurricanes and Irish remain the two favorites for Tuesday's announcement.”

CaneHunt ’14: OT Update | Kc McDermott… crazy

3/29/13: Bruce Feldman, of CBS Sports.com, today posted an article entitled “For blue-chip OT's family, recruiting's been crazy since '05.”

“In 2005, an undersized offensive line recruit from Florida was scrapping so hard to get noticed by the Ole Miss staff at the Rebels summer camp that he literally finished his 40-yard dash in a tumbling heap, scratching up his knees and palms. Tyler McDermott was about three inches under and at least 20 pounds lighter than what college coaches want in an O-line prospect, but the kid sure wasn't going to come up short in grit or tenacity. From the sidelines, McDermott's dad Randy, a former baseball player at Ohio University, nervously observed, same as many other parents did that morning. I was in the Ole Miss indoor facility working on my book Meat Market, which chronicled the recruitment of several prospects that Ole Miss was chasing, including Tyler McDermott.”

CaneHunt”14: RB Update | Cook visits Florida

3/29/13: GatorBait.com today filed the following report on RB prospect Dalvin Cook, who just completed his visit to Gainesville this weekend.

“Florida was finally able to get five-star running back Dalvin Cook, a current Clemson commit, back on campus for an overnight visit and the Gators really made the most of the trip.

“"It was awesome," Cook said of the first part of his visit Thursday evening. "They went over film from yesterday's practice and I got to meet all the running backs.

"[Brian White] said this is the only offense for me."

The Miami (Fla.) Central standout returned early Friday morning to watch the Gators spring practice.

“I was just mainly watching the running backs and the type of drills they do so I can go work on it,” Cook explained. “I saw the type of offense they ran, a pro-style offense, get the ball down hill.

"That’s the offense I want to go to to get me ready for the NFL. It would be a plus.”

McDermott is a Cane come 2014! We needed that! Ereck Flowers and McDermott our bookend tackles for years to come!! Love it! Man I really hope Olsen is a beast at QB and the defense gets their act together. Its looking a lot like 1999 this year recruiting wise.
