"Players...not plays" was Golden's mantra as he came through the door.

Figure out a way to make the system work for Gibson.
 
I think we should be running the spread anyway...

But we ain't changing the system. We don't do it to fit our players on defense so I find it hard to believe that we'd do it on offense.

That idea ain't even practical. It's not that simple. He's the only QB of his kind on our roster. We're gonna start running new plays and principles just for him while the other QB's are left out? No.

That's how you need to recruit. Something none of our prior coaches have done in a LONG time. Its what big time programs do. You stock up talent, and eventually, the best of the best breaks through, that's how you become elite.

Absolutely. I remember when USC had about half a dozen quality QBs and we were reaching for that Daniel somebody or other from Arkansas at the last minute.
 
I think they're looking to incorporate a dual-threat QB into the system, maybe a real QB to run the wildcat. I think that's why they went after Rosier. I guess Coley wants more diversity in our attack.
 
Seems a reasonably intelligent kid, if thats true he will not come here. As long as he wants to play QB, and he seems determined toward that goal, going to a program, offense and staff that have developed QBs of his abilities is what an intelligent kid would do.

If he comes here he is a WR, likely a great one, and that is a great reason to choose us if he wants to play WR.

However, I dont see Golden signing off on some read option spread attack that this kid will need to play in to become a good QB at a top 20 program. There are several top 20 programs that are successfully running such offenses with coaches who have sent QBs of a style like Gibson displays to the NFL. Thats the intelligent choice for this kid to make.

As much as I would like to see this kid here, as long as his goal is QB, it's saying something negative about his decision making if he chooses UM.

I don't know how some of you pigeon hole these young players into a certain system. Cam newton played in a spread option attack at Auburn, he plays in a pro system in the NFL. Coaches coach up players, this kid will have atleast 2 seasons to sit and learn. Why not incorporate spread principles into the playbook. FSU actually did that with Ponder. This team would be so dangerous with a guy like this back there. They would have to commit players to stop him from running. Meaning space for Duke and Yearby etc and one on ones for our speed on the outside. If Golden tells this kid he should be a WR he needs his head examine. The reason they said that to Treon i think his is height.

Please dont allow logic to interfere with a highly entertaining thread.
 
They're going to make it work for the kid. Many pro style offenses these days have spread concepts, especially teams like the Seahawks and Panthers. This is a non issue.

Easy selling point for the kid: Come here, we'll develop you as an NFL QB instead of a spread-option QB.

It was the same pitch Tressel used to get Pryor to go to Ohio State instead of Michigan. Even though he's not as giant, Gibson reminds me of Pryor in many ways as a runner and a passer.
 
He has repeatedly said he wants to play in a spread offense, which tells me has some idea of what his ability level as a QB is best suited to. Those saying he can fit the pro style arent looking at the fact he will have to beat out other QBs at a Pro style school like UM....he will lose those battles if he is forced to play that style and sit the bench or be nudged to wr by the coaches with the offer of PT at that position as opposed to sitting the bench as a QB.

He cant drop back pass as well as Olson or Kaaya....they will beat him out easily because what Gibson does is not valued in our offense. We will not be switching to a spread option offense where he can beat them out easily.

More to the point, why choose a school and staff with zero history of an ability to develop QBs of his style when there are far more logical choices for him to take advantage of?

Just for the record, I'm talking about a sales pitch. I don't see Gibson as a QB here or in the pros. He is not a quick thinker, at least not yet.

But if I'm Coley I tell him that Urban has a terrible rep at the next level for developing QBs, while Coley's last two pupils (both mobile) ended up as first rounders. Let Gibson compete, and if it doesn't work out for him you have a freak of nature catching passes from Brad Kaaya.

Heritage's offense is a grab bag. It's basically hood ball. A bunch of athletes running around making plays. If you can't watch Gibson and see that then I don't know what to tell you.

To bring this kid in here and make him play QB is hoping and wishing he'll develop. He'll be starting over with a blank slate cause as of right no he has no clue how to read a defense, he's just out there running around and slingin it.

Some of you continue to believe that good athlete + good arm = good QB...and that's never been the case. Chances are very good that he'll come here and be just another QB who bails from the pocket and slings the ball up.

I got a crazy idea...how 'bout recruiting a kid who takes snaps from under center and already has an idea of how to read coverages and distribute the ball?

We're not a spread option team. We don't have any other QB's like Gibson.
