A "DERANGED" individual who was not put into a mental health facility. Because that stuff isn't funded at the necessary level.

But right on time, the NY Post will blame cash-bail. As always.

The fact of the matter is that the mentally ill should not be incarcerated indefinitely in REGULAR jails (where they get insufficient treatment for mental illnesses), they should be held and treated in mental health facilities.

Just be honest, the guy in that article is not some criminal mastermind. He is mentally ill. You know it, but you're going to act like he is the criminal equivalent of gang members and/or drug dealers.

He's mentally ill. Being mentally ill, in and of itself, is not a criminal offense. And, yes, the mentally ill do sometimes commit crimes. It's sad, and yet nobody seems to address the real problem.

What do you think would actually happen to this guy if they kept him in Rikers for a few years? Seriously? Be honest and answer the question, and don't go on a tangent about how bad crime is in NYC.

If you think that the "numbers" of mentally ill people who are incarcerated is somehow "good" and "effective" in dealing with the problem, that is your choice.

Again, we are paying MORE MONEY in insurance and other related costs associated with crimes because we WON'T PAY the money to deal with the problem properly. So we push the money around, while not solving any problems. Brilliant.

First time I’ve truly disagreed with you. Context is everything. And I don’t know all the context here. But a young guy who steals a Lambo should not go to jail for life based on that action alone. That’s something Singapore would do not the US. And I think it goes down to our founding values which are built on Judeo-Christian philanthropy and Humanism. We believe in redemption and reformation.

In many parts of the world there would be very little, if any jail time. Cut off the thief’s right hand and send him home as a reformed citizen.

When criminals, sane or not, receive no consequences for their actions, they will continue to commit crimes. Many will grow up to think they can do whatever they want, that it is their "right" to commit crimes. Who is going to stop them? A cop? A DA? A judge?

I never said the numbers of mentally ill people who are incarcerated is good or effective. It is reality, a harsh reality.
