Any Word On Grimble?

I thought rankings didn't matter to you guys? Or are we back to caring about them again now?

I'm confused. Is it only when a low-ranked player unexpectedly succeeds do we say they don't matter or just when a "highly ranked" player doesn't succeed do they not matter? But on signing day if we only have x amount of 4/5 stars then they matter again right? But I guess when those same highly ranked players we cared about on NSD don't succeed then we'll be back to not caring about the stars again right.

Some poster on another thread that after seeing Brandon McGee and davon Johnson do complete turnarounds late in their careers I will no longer give up on anyone again. Could be a late bloomer. Someone said it best. He should have redshirted.

That was my post.

The entire fanbase was ready to give up on another 5 Star named DJ Williams, then things clicked for him.

Golden does not sound confident about the Dline in interviews. He's sidestepping any direct questions regarding that unit and hedging. The secondary sounds much improved but thats not much help if the DL cant get pressure. Still another recruiting class away at minimum.

Goldens has had plenty of time to find some impact DL.

2011:

Smith - had no business being here
Chickillo - has been productive
Williams - apparently isn't very good
King - JAG until proven otherwise
Pierre - solid contributor, good find
Grimble - waiting for the light to come on

2012:

Hamilton - should be a good one
Moore - earned a lot of PT in '12
Ivery - certainly big/strong enough
Briscoe - moved to OL
Hoilett - needs to get bigger
McCord - moved to LB

2013:

AQM - tremendous pick up
Kamalu - intriguing recruit, could be a gem

Goldens just needs to develop these young guys. If Franklins can't get it done, then Goldens needs to find someone who can because there is some talent (albeit youthful) there.

Grimble's tape out of high school was pretty underwhelming. I just figured Scout was being lazy and just going by what they thought was a legit USC commitment at the time.

Golden is definitely below the Mendoza line when it comes to DL recruiting, really is baffling to me considering the ability of a quality player to come in and get almost certain immmediate PT. We cannot afford to strike out again in 2014

I don't think Golden has sidestepped anything. What do you expect him to say when they are playing against each other and mostly running technique drills and situational scrimmages? I like the fact that he's continuing to say everyone needs to get better. He talks the same way about our offense and we know that we are elite in that respect.

In an interview this morning on QAM Golden said Pierre has been tremendous and that Chick is playing good. Loves the way Luther is playing and working. Says Robinson and Pierre are lapping the field at DT and Porter is trying to keep up but, everyone else is still working to get their **** together. He has mentioned in several interviews that the entire defense is stronger and smarter than they were last year.

Discussing T Howard after a practice Golden said "you can actually have a football conversation with the kid now. Before I'd ask what is your responsibility and he would say I got back there coach and now when I ask he says I gotta split the double in my third and play the inside man if..."

I'm ok with his recruiting at End. Keeping Chickillo in his transition class was huge. I feel pretty good about him as a 2 down Starting End and 3rd down DT if that works out. Yeah, he was a legacy, but we've missed on legacies before. (Golden keeping kids like Chick, Olsen, and Mcdermott legacies is pretty impressive if you ask me.) I like Mccord and Hoilet's potential as speed rushers if they put on some weight. We have guys like Rico Williams who is only a redshirt sophomore, no reason he can't turn into a solid rotational guy in a year or two. We brought in AQM this year who looks like he is going to be a playmaker at end in a year or two.

Tackle is the old conversation all over again but its a huge need spot. Pierre was a good find, but we get 2 years of him max and theres literally nobody behind him that has shown any sign of being a dominant DT. Give them time in the weight room and some technique coaching and I bet we have some rotational guys in there but If we don't land a huge class this year, including at least one JuCO, we are in trouble here and it could hold us back for years. DT's take time, you have to have them in place 2 or 3 years in advance.
