Another 'ship opens up -- R. Buchanon not returning

Good luck to him. Hope he shows well at the combine and finds a team and way to stay healthy. Agree with everyone who is saying he was most likely encouraged to pursue this route.

Was a good player here but had bad luck with injuries. Doubt he has much of a future in the league but I wish him well.

Bad player. Good luck "going pro". I don't see it.

Wonder if he was told to go..

You didn't even read the article did you?

I wouldn't exactly call that an article. No direct quotes from anyone - more like a blurb. I'm convinced he was politely asked to consider an NFL career. These things happen all the time.

If everyone is convinced he was shown the door, why the comment about UM going out of their way to explain to him that he's got a pretty good shot to get a 6th year of eligibility?

"But UM said this evening that it will reach out to Buchanan again to make sure he knows that he has a good chance to get a sixth year at UM, from an NCAA compliance standpoint, if he chooses."

Wouldn't they just let him leave if they wanted another scholarship open?

It's called spin. You believe everything you read? No quotes in the article from anyone. My guess is that coaches told Cookie where he stood on the team (he's pretty good, but the coaches want to go in another direction - with younger guys) but as a favor to Cookie, they told him they would inquire about a 6th year. Cookie, in turn, probably said thanks but no thanks and declared.

Not hard to see what's going on here.

I did, but what is presented in public is often different than what happens behind closed doors. There is no reason to hurt the kid by letting people know he was told to go if he was, and it would make a lot of sense, for the reason I illustrated, for us to move on because of numbers, IMHO. Therefore, I "wondered" if he was told to go.

Or you can believe everything you read in the papers if you like. All good.

he has great measurables (prior to the ACL). he could turn some heads at the combine. MAYBE be a late round pick when you factor in all the injuries but probably an UFA

I see what you're saying, but I just don't see what UM gains by telling the media they are going to reach out to Buchanan again to make sure he doesn't want a sixth year if he already told them he didn't. There's no reason for it.

Should've been a SS from the get-go.

did you also make that argument about Beason?

No, different body types. Ramon from the beginning looked like a thin-wasted athlete. His HS highlights, especially the ones on offense, we're of an explosive edge player. Just my opinion but I preferred to see him in space as opposed to taking on blockers but even in the LB role he was misused.

Hopefully he runs well and gets a shot on special teams.

Just some nickname, no clue why. Cleavon Thomas, who played at FSU in the early 2000's was known as "Cookie" too.

when Leon Williams won a starting spot on the Cleveleand Browns I stopped making predictions about who will and wont make it to the league.

Some players(with talent) that suffer numerous injuries in college choose to declare early because they know that they're football lifespan is that much shorter, so why not put your name out there for the opportunity to get healthy, develop in the league as we've seen a few UM alums do lately and make a lil money whether it be as a roster player or practice teamer. He's not gonna be the first player to do so. Marcus Lattimore has had two severe injuries the last two years as well and he declared. I hope he gets a chance to show his stuff in the league even if only for a little while.
