Didn't he have a big influence on Golden and D'Onofrio?

He plays a matchup zone, throws in very timely and well disguised blitzes, and has been a pretty **** good coach doing it.

Tech's defense is head and shoulders above that gimmick offense.... Groh always had pretty solid D's at Virginia

That blitz on 3rd down was Saban-esque. Double A gap blitz with man and a rover behind it.

Ill wait to see grohs defense against a true passing team.. but i like their defense already better than ours.. I guarantee Vtech puts up 20+ on us by halftime..but oh yea they have better and smarter athletes than us...smh

If I remember correctly Golden has said Groh basically taught him the 3-4 defense and was such a influence on his coaching career.

Took him a couple years but atleast against VT Groh has this defense looking very impressive.

Without the personnel, Groh's defense had been pretty mediocre and people felt like he's be on the hot seat if they didn't perform. A couple years into the 3-4 scheme, he's finally got some depth and the right players to run the scheme. Not much different from Todd Grantham at UGA....their D should be stout this year.

Gives me reason to be patient with Coach D'onofrio...can't do much with a D-line that gets no push - which we were warned about all summer.

GT is very aggressive in the zone. They have exotic blitzes, they bump TEs on seam routes, they press WRs... and their DL ins't getting much of a push either (hence why Groh is throwing different blitzes at VTs OL and forcing VT QB to force throws or get rid of it quick.

We let QBs sit in pocket and tie their shoes.

There D was much proved last year from the year before, the GT game will be extremely difficult
