Al Golden - WQAM 3/25

"Antonio Crawford had a brilliant interception to end the scrimmage. He's holding the seam on the #2 receiver and Stephen throws it out to #1 and (Crawford) expands before Stephen throws it"

THEY PATTERN READIN...YEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

I was kinda half way listening to the interview, doing something else and I heard that and immediately stopped. Brought so much joy and fulfillment to my heart lol

I know we're the biggest pattern reading proponents on this board, but this is still awesome

What really caught my ear was when Golden said that right now our db coverage is way better than at any point last year.
Apparantly our db's are starting to mature physically and in football intelligence.

Golden also mentioned on how we have to rush the passer and that with the speed we have at lb we can rush DP and Kirby from the inside, and not just blitz outside backers. Sounds like we might just be lining up our best front 7 whether it's a 4-3 or a 3-4.

I know the every coach always has a player they talk highly of who just doesnt perform up to par. Shayon seems to be that guy for Golden. Frankly if we had 85 shayons we would never win a game and everyone here would want golden fired. He did nothing in games last year and always graded out high also. Golden and donofrio always speak highly of him but he really is just a guy doesnt really bring much to table. Really sucks though because he is a kid who has gone thru alot just to get on the field and you can do nothing but admire the adversity he has been thru but this is a results game. Tape and stats tell the truth and shayon doesnt really bring much heat from his position

Very true, respect for the kids hard work and passion but he does nothing on the field.

Help a guy out with limited football terminology knowledge.... Can you explain the pattern reading?

Then someone needs to take the position from him. I agree with you that I would rather have a Calais Campbell out there. But Golden is right to recognize a kid for overachieving and doing what is asked of him, even if he's not the ideal starter. Hopefully, McCord, AQM, Bond, even Grimble, will take reps away from Green this year. I firmly believed Dye would grab the starting spot until he injured himself at the scrimmage. But if Green remains the starter, then **** yes, he deserves to be recognized.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Many of our fans see our defensive strategy as archaic. They put two and two together. They see our corners lining up 8 yards off the ball and immediately think "this is that old crap Penn State and those slow big 10 teams used to run. This ain't temple anymore D'Onofrio" or something to that effect. The older versions of zone coverage, were based on "spot dropping" or essentially playing grass. It's the classic "bend but don't break" defense, if you will. The newer alternative to this, just happens to be the strategy of the 2 time defending National Champions, and Nick Saban's preferred choice.

"Pattern Reading" as it's commonly referred to, incorporates zone defenses with man principles, almost like a basketball team that traps out of or plays a more aggressive zone, to cause turnovers. The same is true in football with pattern reading. It involves anticipation and requires a certain level of football intelligence to execute properly. The most notable difference in a "pattern reading" zone as opposed to a simple spot drop, is that the defensive backs and linebackers aren't playing grass. They drop into the zone and then matchup man to man according to their responsibility against that route combination and their own responsibility on the play.

It relies on the secondary/linebackers to understand route combinations. The defensive call could be one call, but morph into 3 different defenses depending upon what routes the offense runs. It allows the defense to jump routes if they are in tune with each other and understand passing concepts, route trees, and combinations. There are common combinations that are used by every passing offense in the country and if the defense can understand those concepts, it can morph into whatever it needs to be for that particular play.

Antonio Crawford's play, was just an example of our guys football intelligence growing from where it was last year, when guys would be standing around looking at each other like "Where are we suppose to go". It requires discipline and great repetition to execute properly and it's a major reason why our defense sucked so bad last year. It's an extremely difficult defense to throw on young guys, especially young guys who were only in camp for 6 weeks before Boston College. It was one of my biggest reasons for giving D'Onofrio a pass last year. He essentially took one on the chin last year, with the hope that the drubbings would pay dividends in the future. Crawford's play tells me that it just might.

Jerzey,

Our defense often looked so terrible last year because they were spot dropping. They were doing so behind zero pass rush and with limited range from its Safeties.

I know they mixed it in. They had to, in an effort to overcome the lack of understanding of the defense. Notre Dame is a game where I remember specifically them just simplifying it and spot dropping, but I definitely saw sometimes last year where the concepts where being called, but not always executed.

And yes, large and almost all of the blame for our terrible defense goes to our infantile defensive line. Not to mention those safeties I will not name, because no announcer should call their name all year.

Speaking of safeties, I like how Golden mentioned in the interview having two safeties with speed. I know he's talking about Jenkins and Bush. So excited to see them on the field together this season.

He also mentioned possibly bringing safeties on the blitz to help create more pressure.

We have a lot of athletes on this defense now and we should be able to scheme up pressure with favorable matchups.

I remember seeing an NFL special on route reading (can't remember which team). Just as an example, a common route tree is to have the outside receiver run a go or post, clearing out the flat for the slot or te to run an out. The outside corner back started to run with the go, turning his back and disguising his intentions, and then after a few yards broke outside and upfield to defend the out.

It seemed like a really cool concept but also very difficult to execute. Somebody in a recruiting board thread on Kain Daub posted a great breakdown of how Alabama treats linebackers and dbs in their system. Often these are hybrid players who learn multiple positions which I imagine helps them understand their responsibilities in a complicated system. As I see the talent we are starting to develop across our back 7 it seems we are getting much closer to being able to do something like that. As always the question is the Dline.
