Here is the summary:

-When asked if Herb Waters could be the best WR on the team, Golden said “There is a chance.” Says he works very hard, has a great attitude. Graded out at 92% during the scrimmage. Has lateral quickness for a big WR. Never on a “list”, always does what he is supposed to. Talked about him for a good 2-3 minutes.

-Front 7 making a lot of progress. Played well in short yardage and goal line situations during the scrimmage.

-Very impressed with Olsen Pierre. 300 lbs now. Playing with good hands and good leverage. Luther Robinson also very matured, great attitude. Shayon Green holds the point, graded out at 92%.

-Getting activity from the LB group. Figs stood out. Set the tone with the Duke hit. Corns, Kirby, Denzel, Gaines all having good spring.

-Was asked about Duke’s usage-Golden said they watch how much they are working the kids. Only practice two days and then the Saturday scrimmage. Duke still has to prove he is the guy (ex. carry it 20-25 times a game). Not a concern.

-On more takeaway’s: Has to do with a “quiet mind” – understanding what you need to do. Last year, young guys thinking too much. Coverage right now is better than at any point last fall because back 7 now has experience. Matching routes better, know exactly what they need to do.

-Football intelligence is better. Several batted balls. Crawford had a brilliant interception, broke on the ball early.

-Pass Rush: Definitely need to get a better pass rush. Golden said it’s on him. Can scheme the rush, but it takes away from coverage. Discussed the NY Giants winning the SB by rushing 4. Need to find good pass rushers. Figs will help out in that area. Rugged. Mentioned bringing the inside LB’s and potentially safety’s on more blitzes.

-Asked about spring recruiting: Once spring evaluation period starts, can go into schools, get transcripts, talk to coaches, etc. Can go to practices, but cannot have contact with the kids. Film is online everywhere now, do not need to request. Try to get them to come to campus. Open invite to all coaches and students to come to practice this week (spring vacation).

-On the 2014 recruiting class being the most talented: Golden said he only been here 3 years, but talking to those who have been here a while (Bluestein, etc.), says it is the deepest class in at least a decade.

The secondary is a huge key. Gunter, Howard, Crawford, Bush, and Jenkins were all first-year guys in '12. They might not be great next year but they should be better.

I'm looking forward to seeing this defense bring more pressure, with LB's & Safety's. Some teams simply aren't on the level of making it all happen with 4 down lineman alone; because it requires the right personnel!

It seems the genral philosopy is to be stout against the run, beacuse of the concern of being gashed for 300+ rushign yards every game... Its understandale, because of our recent history against the run.. But Gotta throw in some gambling blitzes... Blitzing helps against the run also!!

We have an improved secondary that may cause the QB to hold the ball .5 second longer, so i think we can bring da house now!

The alternative, is to be basic, and keep Shayon Green in the game, from whom we won't see a pass rush. Who's gonna step up and take some playing time from Green & Chick?

"Because we played so many young guys last year there were really so many instances on defense where you have 9 or 10 guys doing one thing and another guy doing another...."

I'm expecting them to be a lot better and an improved pass rush could make an even greater impact.

The comment on Olsen Pierre interests me. He is the one player Golden "brought with him" from Temple and seems to speak to his ability to identify raw talent. Many seasoned posters here comment on a prospect's frame as having room to add weight. How is that identified? Was anyone here aware of Pierre as a recruit?

Olsen Pierre was approximately 250Lbs when he came in, and was largely considered to be a DE. He's now 300Lbs; there you go.

As far as playing with good leverage (on the inside), Coach is pointing to the transition from DE to DT, in getting a good disruptive pop at "pad level", instead of coming out of the blocks too high (like a DE tends to do, when pass rushing)...

If Shayon green is as good as golden says he is I will be very happy

Shayon isn't very explosive, big, powerful or talented but the guy plays as hard as anyone on this team. I think Golden wishes he had 85 Shayons.

Shayon Green holds the point, graded out at 92%.

Simply means he's doing a good job of not getting driven off the ball, at the point of attack. That's genrally good stuff against the run, but he needs to turn the corner, and provide a pass rush as well.

Until Green shows improvement as a pass rusher, i'm all for limiting his playing time to 3rd and Short; when we definately need that kind of stuff.

Great Cane, but we need more from the position rigth now! (IMO, Dyron Dye would have taken his playing time this year)

Can someone please, please, please clarify the open practice thing for this week? It says its vacation week but spring break was last week? If it is this week, what time and days of the week are they? Thank you so much.

I don't know if the term "defensive synergies" is actually a thing, but it seems that reasonable improvement by the secondary as a unit and reasonable improvement by the DL as a unit will result in significant improvement for the overall defense. The more our guys understand coverage, the more we are able to send an extra player on a blitz, which means fewer people to block the dlinemen and improves their chances of getting to the qb, which reduces the time our dbs have to cover.

Not rocket science, but I would guess marginal improvement in all three defensive units will result in a sizable leap forward for the defense as a whole this year.
