randy couldnt recruit, he hated it. he would offer a whole team a scholarship. once Clint went to L-ville, we were hurt.

So true. And I'm sure that played a part on home holding on to D Onfrio. He felt bad for bring him down to SF in that mess. Still think his scheme might not be best for SF kids. When they have to think **** hits the fan. Read and react!

No D was definitely the downfall of his own doing. Just tired of the bashing of Golden and Manny when they had nowhere near the support that Mario has, and in the case of Golden scholarship reductions, etc

Al Golden may (or may not) have had his shortcomings as head coach back when he was at Miami, but I would love to have this defense this season. We would be the CFP favorite with this defense. No team in this 12 team CFP has a defense as porous as ours

He’s literally been successful everywhere else he’s been. I guess it’s just the Miami curse, idk but he got that notre dame defense playing some ball

Al’s time in the NFL taught him to be more multiple and he has gotten better since. ND is no joke. I hate them but I hope they beat the crap out of Dog**** U. In fact I want every non SEC and B1G school to win.
 
It’s always the head coaches, coordinators & positions coaches that suck. Heck players too.. For decades. I don’t know how we keep getting so unlucky..

Miami definitely couldn’t be the problem.
 
Al Golden certainly isn't running the same defensive scheme / philosophy that he was married to when at UM (the old Al Groh defense). He learned a lot during his time in the NFL and adapted, then joined ND with a defensive coordinator as HC who also ensured that he didn't regress to his old (Al Groh scheme). Groh lost his HC job because of his defense ... and was then hired by Paul Johnson at Ga Tech as DC ... lasted a couple of seasons and was fired and Johnson commented "Al has a defensive scheme that only works in his head".

Al Golden's 2012 defense was the only Miami defense worse than this year's.

That said, Golden had a mere fraction of the financial support that Mario has. Heck, he had a fraction of the support that Manny had! And Randy Shannon had even less support than Golden. It's not entirely an apples to apples comparison.

Al Golden was a defeated man due to the rigors of recruiting So Florida premadonnas. Golden almost had a heart attack when Matthew Thomas shunned UM and picked FSU. He had accompanied Golden and staff to a UM BB game .. and at half time the entire arena was chanting "Matthew Thomas" .... it was nuts. Al thought he had him locked up. A couple of days later he committed to FSU. Al wanted out of Miami and thought the PSU job was his. He went to interview believing it was a detail only ... and was shocked on that Sunday when they said " thanks for the courtesy of visiting ... but we have other candidates to interview first". Franklin showed up, was interviewed, and hired, and Al Golden was a broken man.
 
Golden with manny as DC would have been interesting

Golden surprisingly found some lower ranked gems but he wasn’t a good fit down here

Being married to his DC is ultimately what made his grave
