Al Golden Interview w/ Clinton Portis

He gone after this year. I think Golden wouldn't want him to stay another year and risk injury, even if it made our team weaker. That's the type of coach he is.

Also, it's clear how much more excited Al is about this season than ever before. Feel like our equation for success is "Good QB play + Slightly-Above-Average Defense = Shot at Playoffs"
Not predicting good qb play or slightly-above-average defense. But you have to imagine that those two variables aren't impossible. So the playoffs aren't impossible? Guys

IDK if this D can control the line of scrimmage, so turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. I would ask special teams to that. I REALLY think Duke should be on kickoffs with Coley against loserville. He could house one or two, and really take pressure off the new QB and a suspect D.

I'm with you. I'd use Duke on returns against all of our best opponents. A TD or long return to the 5 could be the difference between winning and losing.

Yep - Duke needs to be involved in the return game. Coley is great but it would be nice to have your best player back there. Many teams don't shy away with that. Better alternative to seeing Artie Burns tip tap his way to the 25 and possibly fumble it.

The whole QB play question is addition by subtraction. I think Kaaya or Heaps will play better than snickers last year. Just be smart, manage the game and get the ball in the playmakers hands. We don't need John Elway just an efficient, steady guy.

Oh yeah, and converting a 3rd down once in a while would be greatly appreciated. This is where my boy Braxton will shine.

If that's the case, then why did every game last year seem to hinge on whether our qb played well. And in what world does a team with an 80th ranked defense just need a game manager.

We're going to need good qb play to be anything more than mediocre unless something wildly unexpected happens. And I mean a guy making plays not handoffs and screen passes.

The only time Duke should return kicks is if the game is on the line. This team now has other kids like Gray, Elder, and Brady whow can do that, and do it well. No need to get Duke killed. I'm not sure I even like Coley returning kicks. Punts I'm ok with.

Bottom line: If you want to be a really good team you're going to need a really good QB. You'll never be a championship level college team in today's era with the high-octane passing offenses with a QB who can't make plays for you.

This whole concept of all you need is a guy to hand it off and dump it off to RBs is garbage and rubbish. You'll never be anything more than a 3rd place Coastal Division team with that sort of QB.

When your team isn't great, you need to get as many plays as you can out of your special teams. You can win games with KR. All those guys you listed can't carry Duke's jock strap on KR.
