Al Golden 3* vs Randy Shannon 5*

guys it's real simple.
Players take on the personality and character of their coach.
Randy just wasn't a very good leader of men.
Golden is.

It's hard to buy that when Shannon, for all his faults, is a fighter and a survivor. He's had a rough life but is still standing. Given that, your theory doesn't hold water when held up to the fact our team under him consistently crumpled like a wet paper bag under pressure and in every stretch run. You'd think they would have been more like him in that regard. We have to remember that prior to being tabbed for HC, he had succeeded at every level of the sport he had been at. You don't get that far in life with a losing attitude and personality.

Randy was well regarded by many of his players, and some of them looked up to him as a mentor and father figure, so in a certain way he was a good leader of men. He just wasn't any good at leading a football program, which is another thing entirely.

I feel that AG will be less 'loved', more feared and more respected as a leader of our program. He's definitely taken a cue from the Jimmy Johnson playbook in regards to how he operates as the figurehead, but only time will tell whether the results are any different from Shannon's. For now, it's just talk.

This.

Shannon overcame a lot. Shannon was a self-disciplined, self-starter, and I think he mistakenly assumed that the players would have the same mindsets and on their own do what was necessary to empower themselves.

And that didn't work out.

He assumed his players had the same mindset as he did which was his downfall... Everyone practice hard for their allotted time, but the winners take it upon themselves to go above an beyond and our players didnt... He wasnt a bad leader that ludicrous... He perspective on life was more than just football, but he some of his methods proved that he was a novice to his position... Hopefully, working under Patterson will allow him to improve as a coach...

Anyone want to put together a list of Al Golden 3*s and Randy Shannon 5*s. The only RS 5* that I can remember actually turning into a baller is Arthur Brown, who as we all know, is no longer with the Canes.

Who were the other 5*s? Forston, Seantrell, Brown, Ray Ray...

the irony in that is arthur brown balled out after he left miami

And his performance after his 4th year was still not better than Spence, Sharpton and Cmac... He sat behind them... He was only here for 2 years...

Being a fighter and a survivor ( to what I don't know) doesn't automatically make you a good leader of men so I'm not sure what you are getting at. With Randy Shannon the Peter Principle was actually at play.
Randy was a horrible leader. He was a polarizing figure not just with his players but his coaching staff. If he had a plan, he had no idea how to get his players to execute it. If he had a vision, he had no idea of to express it and sell it to his players.
The one biggest complaint of the team was that "there were no leaders on the team". Leaders develop leaders. Shannon had no clue how. He didn't empower players to lead. He's described as being a control freak and hated relinquishing control to anyone. This had to play a role in stunting the development of leaders.

Honestly, Id rather have a coach who's more respected and feared as a leader, than a 'players coach'(we've had a few at UM). When it's all said and done, the latter gets more of this program and in talking to guys who played for both JJ and ERRickson, while they said ERRickson was more lenient and perhaps looser with the rules, they respect Johnson much more and almost to a man in looking back, would have rather have played for JJ for all four years during their run at UM

Coaches aren't necessarily supposed to be liked by the players while they are on campus. You'd hope they would be respected by them as they get on with their lives and become adults. Those are the leaders that really resonate and make a difference

The teachers I really remember and thankful for, aren't the ones that were easy.

Randy Shannon is a survivor. He did go through some terrible things growing up. He will always be a Hurricane, and he was/is a good assistant coach. But he was an utter failure as a head coach, at least his first time around. I will NEVER forget that 2010 season. What a letdown.

No doubt in my mind you give the keys to Golden from 08-10 and we would have been a much better team especially in 2010.

WE WILL SEE COME GAME TIME & WHO STEPS UP IN THE 4th QTR SLUGFESTS THE SEASON....NO WAY TO TELL WHEN SOME OF THESE GUYS CRACK SKULLS @PRACTICE FOR A STARTING SPOT ON THE ROSTER THEN PACE THEMSELVES TO THE COMBINE EVERY YEAR....THE MASS EXODUS THAT LEFT OUR CUPBOARDS BARE THIS PAST YEAR SPEAKS VOLUMES TO THE POINT.....

GOLDIE STAYED TRUE TO THE JUNIORS & SENIORS WHO STUCK IT OUT HIS 1st YEAR IN....FROM HERE ON OUT, LETS JUST HOPE HE STAYS AS TRUE TO HIS WORD AND REWARDS HEART.....NOT HYPE....BUT BASED ON HIS APPROACH AND PERSONALITY....MY MONEY'$ ON HEART...

...AND NOTHING WOULD DO MY HEART BETTER THAN A PREGAME / ALL-OUT BRAWL @MID-FIELD OCT 20th....

Shannon=Great role model (based on overcoming personal hardships and achieving as a player and assistant coach) but a poor head football coach. Time will tell what we have with Golden. Some of the early signs are encouraging. As you say, time will tell whether we get different results.
