A note of caution on the offensive line

Like everybody else, I'm exciting about the future of Miami's offensive line. There might not be a better group in the country in terms of size and athleticism. But before we get carried away with expectations and set ourselves up for disappointment, here are two numbers to consider:

26

This is the number of total starts along the OL. Ideally, this number would be close to 100. But McDermott and Flowers have never started, and Bunche only has one start. As talented as these players are, they lack experience.

0

This is the group's number of starts as a unit. They've never played together, which means they haven't had a chance to develop the chemistry that's essential to great offensive play. The hope is this group stays relatively healthy and becomes a well-oiled machine by the end of 2012 and 2013.

Again, I'm not trying to downplay this group because I think they can be special. But let's be patient and not scream "Overrated" after three games.

D, aint nobody gonna be excited about a miami oline before the season after the last ten years. How many times before we have played a game in the last decade have we had people say, "bro, we avg. over 310 pounds on oline, we gonna be blowing guys off the line" only to see us fumble on our feet and play like crap.

If there is any unit that has to prove it on the field before they get ANY love its the oline, especially a kehoe corched oline

None of those numbers matter.

Just mention Kehoe. That's all the reason I need to expect disappointment with this group.

D$ what are your thoughts on Kehoe?

He's a polarizing guy. A lot of coaches talk badly about him, yet he's put more guys in the NFL than **** near anybody. Some players don't think much of him, but the majority swear by him.

The way this group is playing in Weeks 9 through 12 will tell me a lot.

D do you have concerns with our depth, I feel like if one player goes down we're F.

Nope, I like the depth. Jermaine Johnson is talented, Seantrel will factor in and the coaches are high on Ben Jones's development.

One thing to consider is that our TE's will likely be an upgrade over last year as blockers. Especially important if we are going to be running two TE sets--which I think we will.
Sound post that provides good perspective.

Kehoe did coach the online from 99-2001 didn't he? Those olines were pretty **** dominant. This group lacks experience and they are the key to our offenses success. Here is to hoping for the best.

The great offensive lines in cfb always have a ton of combined starts. ANyone with super high expectations for this OL is high.

Besides Linder nobody has ever started ONE game at their respective positions.

Really glad Jones is developing, I remember lots of talk about him being completly lost the last two years.

D, interesting you said polarizing, fans feel the same way about him. Some like him, some don't . Ive been on the fence with him ever since Johnson was hired by Dallas. If I recall he was the only coach that was not offered to go to Dallas.

I haven't been this excited for a season to start in a very long time. That said, I'm not overly optimistic, due to how poorly the past seasons have turned out. Injury riddled and uninspired.

That said, I don't think this team is going to disappoint. Some momentary lapses of reason, sure, but overall I expect solid play.

I agree that we should be cautiously optimistic. But the caution should have nothing to do with Kehoe. Just as with Swasey, the problem was the HC, not the position coach. When Kehoe was Assistant HC under Coker, that was a different situation. Now, his job is to develop players, and he has plainly shown he can do that, not just here, but also at Ole Miss (Michael Oher). The issue is youth and inexperience. We need to accept that our first few games will see drives killed by false starts, missed assignments and other typical issues with young/inexperienced lines.

That said, the fact this offense has shown such strong reported production in camp suggests they're already pretty good. I know our defense is relatively raw and thin, as well, so that played into it. But I don't think it's the whole story -- we will control the ball and put points on the board with this O.

Origin: Some idiot Gator that's in office.

To be honest, I think it's stupid and annoying to read. "Corch," like that's supposed to be funny or something.

GTFO

"Corch" should only ever be used to refer to those individuals who have made a pact with satan and thereby agreed to coach the gators, like "Corch Irvin Meyers," the original corch.

O-line definitely has talent on it, but like DMoney said we don't have much experience there. I think we're solid at each position on the line and Jermaine Johnson, Ben Jones, and Jared Wheeler should provide decent depth. Let's not forget Seantrel is still a specimen and he could give the line a huge boost.

Imagine if Brandon Washington hadn't decided to leave early. I'd be even more intrigued about the Olines potential.
