49ers running cover 3 out of a 3-4

There's nothing wrong with the scheme, the problem is with his teaching of it. The players just aren't learning, Saban can teach it to rednecks in Alabama, so it's not impossible either
Nick Saban over signs by a good 15 to 20 players. He has a plethora of walkons and resources that Miami doesn't have. Nick Saban can attract the top talent in the country. Nick Saban is a defensive mastermind.

Al Golden is not a defensive mastermind, Al golden doesn't over sign, Al Golden doesn't have unlimited resources, Al golden doesn't have the pick of the litter of recruits around the country and Al Golden has to deal with 9 scholarship losses over the next three years. Don't give me this bull**** that its not the scheme. Its the scheme and its how its being taught and its the lack of current talent and future talent that can be had.

The scheme is bull**** and how its being implemented is bull****.

The kids he signs are great athletes, but not necessarily the brightest football players. I don't see a team full of valedictorians similar to stanford, Bama is fast strong and agile and he teaches the scheme. Now, I'm not covering for D'O, I see it as an indictment of his teaching (i.e. he can't) when Perryman still doesn't get it. But the scheme itself is sound so there's no reason to start rerecruiting positions for a new scheme or abandon the Golden ship. Just find a ******* DC who can teach the players the scheme.
So UVA kids were able to "get it" Temple kids were able to "get it" **** even Bama kids are able to "get it" but somehow when it comes to South Florida kids Golden and Dorito just can't seem to teach their scheme anymore. I call bull****. Its a scheme issue. I also find it hard to believe that Alabama plays this soft *** defense. I just don't buy it and I don't see it from all the games I've watched them play.

1) He could teach temple because he had 5 years to teach them, all RS Seniors
2) Alabama does run it, they just read and react quickly and attack. They have DL who get pressure on their own, and linebackers who make the correct reads on crossing routes. Its a slugger defense because the players arent constantly out of position.
Bull****. Golden and Dorito have a passive mentality when it comes to defense specifically and football in general. You think Saban with the same exact talent would have went into the fsu game plan thinking I will just let them dink and dunk on me until they make a mistake? You think Saban would have said publicly our game plan was to keep Logan Thomas in the pocket? I call bull****. Golden and Dorito coach not to lose they do t coach to win and it's reflected in how this team performs. We were up against u*** and golden decides to take his foot off the gas pedal. It resulted in a closer game than it could have been. Coaching not to lose is in Goldens DNA dude is soft and you can't tell me that's how Saban approaches the game even if they run the same scheme

Yeah, I call bullshizzle on our scheme being too complicated for our guys to understand. You think FSU has neuro surgeons on defense? The blaming the players not being smart enough is lazy excuse making.

Let's say...for arguement's sake...that the scheme is a sound scheme and the players just aren't getting it. I've made this point before - if the same kinds of problems with the defense are occurring year after year, the problem is either sh1tty scheme or sh1tty coaching. You want to stand by the scheme, fine. That means the coaches are sh1tty so either scrap the scheme or scrap the coaches. You pick.

I don't get the "too complicated" excuse. Defensive coaches at Michigan State, Louisville, FSU, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, VT, USC, etc. are all able to teach their schemes and have their guys execute it, but our guys can't figure it out? That's BS, but let's just say that's the case...then guess what, changes need to be made to the scheme so that the players can execute it. It is the coach's job to put his players in the best position for them to succeed.

This isn't just about talent, this is about an inability to do anything well defensively. Forget making Logan Thomas look like a stud, we got gashed on the ground by a completely mediocre VT running game/OL. Our guys looked like they were on skates again, like last year. Since we know we can't pressure the passer, and we can't cover the short/intermediate passing game, is the one thing we do well not getting beat deep?

If you want to sell the "we don't have enough talent to beat FSU" right now excuse, I can actually buy it (unfortunately). Shayon Green, Cornelius, Gaines, Highsmith, etc., those guys just aren't going to be able to match up against FSU's offensive talent at this point. However, you can't sell the "JAG" excuse against the Wakes, UNCs, VTs, etc. This year's VT offense is lacking playmakers. This is a team that's had Lee Suggs, Kevin Jones, Ryan Williams, etc at RB, and those guys were great college RBs. They've had some studs at WR like Eddie Royal. None of the guys on this VT team are anywhere close to that, and yet, the gouged us for 550 yds and 42 points. We have plenty talent to keep that from happening if our talent was utilized in the right way.

Actually bama does not generate much of a rush from their dl....its beena weakness for them.

I disagree with anyone who says it's too complicated. There are far more complicated defenses, i'm sure, throughout the country. All schools have the same time restrictions and all players have access to the playbook and some time to learn it. They have the winter and summer which should be less demanding in terms of football/school related responsibilities. It's year 3. These excuses shouldn't fly.

I think the biggest things with Bama and Saban right now are that A. He's a brilliant defensive mind. He's probably one of the better defensive coaches of our time, if not ever in college football and B. The competition. The way things are rolling up there, if you can't grasp the scheme or won't put in the time necessary to do it, someone else will and they'll play that kid regardless of class.

What's the big deal, why can't you run Cover-3 out of the 3-4?

some porsters were saying that golden ran a two-gap 3-4 under al groh, donofrio learned 4-3 with cover 3 zone behind it at PSU, and when they united for temple, they mashed the two philosophies together for a two-gap 3-4 with cover 3 zone, which is fundamentally incompatible as a base defense.

i dont buy it.
