3 Star Studs/Underated Recruits

Coach Richt has said South Florida is so deep in talent a 3-star would be a 4-star or even a 5-star somewhere else.

Our fan base has been saying that since bread was first sliced.

I remember back in the mid-80's and Butch was recruiting coordinator during JJ's first couple of years. He said he could recruit just in south Florida and be competitive for a NC. I don't know if he included QBs because there were never many great QB prospects in south Florida. Have we ever had a top QB from south Florida in the last 30 years? The only one who comes close was Craig Erickson. Are there others?

From the 2015 class Cager and Gauthier should be impact players this year, Redwine is playing welll above his ranking, and Jackson and Knowles are developing into rotation guys as well. That's what's great about this staff, the 3 star guys are developing into Miami calibre players (and credit to to the players for putting in the work)

Jimmy Johnson always said he wanted kids that got better every time they stepped on the college practice field, not the elite recruits who never progressed. I still think that's true. I also believe there is something to the notion that our lower stars could translate into higher stars elsewhere in the country. We had the greatest recruiting drama almost twenty years ago when we pulled in the nation's top player, D.J. Williams. The next summer, I got a message from a friend that in fall practices, some kid named Vilma was better than Williams. I don't think that was ever an exaggerration. Vilma was a relative unknown but he was great from the start. D.J. was not. He played his freshman season as a backup fullback, if i remember correctly.

Vilma was an incredible surprise. Our biggest competition for him was Stanford before they were a football significant school.
