3-4 question, is this just a crazy talk?

First off we typically do not run a standard 3-4 front. We more often then not run a 5 man front or 50 front. And to answer your question no in a 50 we do not 2 gap. We single gap and slant 50 eagle strong or weak depending on the look. Sometimes our 4- 3 isn't actually a 4-3. We like to bring up a OLB last second to the line. You have to look at the alignment of the NT. He's usually in either a 0 tech or shaded almost at a 1 tech. If we are lined up in a 4-3 then we're aligned in a 3 tech and 1 tech.

We do not run a 50 and never have

You went old school..lol
So what exactly do we run?

He's wrong, we do run a 50 but we are a multiple front defense

Ummm all 3-4 defenses can technically be "five man fronts". In the picture you linked, we are in a 4-0-4 with two OLBs standing up on the ends. We are two gapping.

I've never seen a base 5-0-5 defense that two gaps it's nose and the ends are 1 gap. Typically you will see a 3-0-3 bear front, but we don't run that here.

BDC you live & learn is all one can hope for...

So you're a golden slurper I see... nothing is wrong with the defense huh? smh...

Re-read & edit lol... No I think the base defense is ******* joke... I think in order for there to be a turn around No'D has to go and so does Jethro. I have watched the defensive line countless times and it's just a plain stupid scheme to play a read & react defensive front when our personnel aren't even that good to be effective in a single gap 4-3. It's just ignorant! If you have a lack of talent then make it simple and fast. If you have 4 & 5 stars stacked then you can have that luxury with more talented players. We don't! Plus there is a serious lack of teaching going on at the DT position specifically.

There is that clear enough for you

Ron Rivera was being interviewed the other day on the radio. They played primarily a 3-4 defense at Carolina but Rivera said that with the advent of spread and quick passing, the most critical component of the defense is not read and react gap control, it's firing upfield as fast as possible. There's no more reading and reacting on defense - he wants his guys to penetrate the gap as fast and hard as possible.

They aligned in 0 shaded, 4 almost 5 and what looks like a 3. We have slanted a lot out of this front and did it against FSU. You obviously can't 2 gap if you're slanting the whole DL. They have done a lot of weird **** with alignments which was some of our problem throughout the year. Also I'm assuming you mean we're two-gaping just the NT... The ends are not 2 gapping and haven't been. The OLB either go in and contain or drop into coverage. Hence the Shayon Green dropping into coverage. I'm not saying that specifically was a good idea just merely pointing it out.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, at all.

From strong to weak this is what is shown:

Standup OLB in a 9 outside the TE.
Olson Pierre heads up on the OT, responsible for B and. C gaps.
Curtis Porter heads up on the C. Has both A gaps.
Anthony Chickillo heads up on the OT. Has B and C gaps.
Standup OLB in a ghost 9.

This is the bread and butter 3-4 2-gap alignment.

"50 defenses" mean five defensive linemen, meaning none of those guys has any pass coverage responsibility. The only teams that run 50 fronts are in high schools that play run only teams all season.

Stop misleading people.

No listen bro I literally just sat through a class on 50 and the OLB / rush ends or whatever you want to call them are being utilized like that... Don't tell it to me tell it to the guy who's teaching it across the country at all the glazier schools.

Lmfao!

Our base defense comes from Golden who got it from Groh who was on staff with Parcells for decades who invented it. Not a single thing you've been saying is even remotely accurate in relation to our base D, or the picture you uploaded.

Lol you're trying to confuse the issue now... Where the **** was I ever talking about a base 3-4 defense. When we did run a 3-4 it sucked! We ran variations of 4-3, 3-4 and 50... I was specifically talking a 50.

So. old Cane defense is the answer to the modern spread just like it was to the wishbone and Nebraska option attack. No offense works well with you it its face all the time.

You specifically said we dot run the 3-4, which actually not only do we run but it's our base defense.

You then uploaded a picture of the utmost typical 3-4 2-gap defense front (called an Okie front), with two very obvious standup OLBs, and then used that picture to claim we don't play the 3-4, but the 50.

You then inaccurately described the shades/techs of our DL, which is clearly in a 4-0-4.

The "slanting" you are discussing is actually "stunting", and we do it on passing downs. It's a called play.

I can honestly say that every single thing you have been saying is completely wrong.

Just want to mention this because the Groh stuff that was brought up, Bob Diaco, who was the DC at Notre Dame and is now the HC at Connecticut, was the LB coach at UVA under Groh/Golden for a few years, and runs literally the exact same defense as us from what I've seen, but with even less man coverage (they run almost exclusively zone). I haven't gone super in depth into the ND def yet (just some stuff watching prospects in the past and some more recently), but from an alignment and concept stand point it looks exactly the same.

As for the 2 gap/1 gap stuff, I'm not sure about the 1 guy 2 gapping and then no one else, but there are defenses that have 2 guys 2 gap and then the rest is 1 gap. Seattle does it with Red Bryant at 4t and the nose. I've seen us use it a fair amount as well (though I just started a rewatch of this season so I'm not sure how much we end up using it later on the in the year).

For what we run, for our "base", what GoldenShowers is describing is accurate, but that's really mostly against "base" offenses (12/21). When teams are 3 wide and we have the base defense on the field the SLB will usually walk out onto the WR. We also run some (though very little) 3-0-3 (again, early, not sure about later yet). Against GT we'll always run 4-3 because of the option stuff.

a 50 is what usf use to run under leavitt... 4 down lineman and a stand up linebacker on the line...

4 0 4 is 2 gap yes but what I was saying is we've slanted out of the 50. More my fault for doing a poor job of clarifying. So you're saying in that photo we weren't running a 50 front? Lol ok... Obviously you just want to argue. Golden has said many times we are a multiple front defense. **** we ran a ton of 4-3 against Louisville. So I must just be imagining things!

Oregon's defense looked a lot like ours but their ends were a lot faster. What those videos left me wondering is what happens on running downs?

They aren't 2 gapping, they are attacking and while their DBs play off, they don't play as far off as our guys do. Not to mention they look like they know wtf they are supposed to be doing while our guys looked confused and lost most of the time.

How many times does it need to be said that a 50 front is five defensive lineman and either 2 or 3 LBs???

Jesus ******* Christ that picture is three DL and 4 LBs, WHICH IS OUR BASE DEFENSE.

Having 5 guys on/near the LOS DOESNT MAKE IT A 50 DEFENSE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

If there are 4 DL and a LB, IT IS NOT A 50.

What you most likely saw is a common 4-3 under front.

We need a primer on here on X's and O's.

You have no ******* clue what you're talking about, when it comes to a 50... N O N E!!! The OLB'ers come up as a hybrid or AKA: Rush End! Heard those terms before? You should've! A 50 is a NT, 2 DT's & 2 Hybrid / Rush Ends. You do not play a 50 with 5 down lineman. Good Lord!!!
