2025 Roster Discussion

Hard for me to get too excited for anything much improved over last year - mid-week record should be better by several wins or something is really wrong.

Lost Gage and Rafe in the rotation, only two returning position starters and brought in a slew of newcomers through the portal and freshmen recruits.

Larranaga struggled to manage short-term portal players, hard to imagine JD being any better.

I'll be happy w 5 - 8 games over .500 and sneaking into the tourney.
I'd say this is about where I am.

I’m not too tied into baseball, but didn’t fsu add a bunch of transfers last year and made an Omaha run? Not saying we will make it to Omaha, but do you see it somehow working out for us and let’s say making it to a super or is that too unrealistic?

Do you think it’s fair to say if we want a chance at any regional appearance we must be undefeated heading into the Florida series?
Nothing final like that. Lots of combinations will get you the number you need.

Obviously you want to pile up the wins early if you can, but just because you lose a game before Florida doesn't mean season over.

I just feel like they don't have enough arms at the moment to be a National seed etc.

I'd be ecstatic w that outcome, but am not holding my breath. JD and Laz are both pitching coaches, so, the potential is there. They'll need their best development skills ever to effectively convert relievers to starters in 1 year, sort out the bullpen, find a solid mid-week guy, etc.

The transfer position players should adapt quickly, so, you'd think the lineup should score some runs.

You think we can be an offensive-heavy team and score our way into wins? Like have multiple guys with 10+ homers? Idk what to make of the new bats and idk if any freshman can have a Cuvet level impact

Matt Shodel and I Just had a brief baseball discussion on Canesport live. He is not optimistic at all, he think we will be worse than last year. He mentioned something about some former players not being welcomed back. Really weird

Worse than last year is one of the few scenarios that would genuinely surprise me. @BPJoe articulated the case for us being as bad as last year well in his second and third paragraphs on the last page. That's kind of my worst plausible scenario at this point.

My base expectation coming out of the fall is 5-8 wins better than last year and around the bubble. There's a lot of low hanging fruit to pick up wins from last year, and I just think the top to bottom pitching should be better even if it's not perfect.

I want the preface this by saying I love and appreciate everything JD has done for Miami. He’s a great guy and a legend here.

That being said, I agree with Shodel. I believe JD is the worst hire this school has made in 40+ years and this current team is a bunch of decent lower level players being counted on to play the same or better in a more difficult league. I think our pitching is awful and our schedule is harder. I expect our second losing season in a row and I think it’s going to be so bad there may be a change after the season.

Miami has not had two consecutive sub .500 seasons in the history of the program. Two losing seasons in-a-row would get JD fired.
Hope you're wrong on the one hand (being sub .500 again), but right on the other (he absolutely should be fired if that happens again).

It would truly shock me if were .500, i truly don't even see how it's possible. Im expecting us to start the season be 9-0 going into UF. worst case would be 7-2 with two midweek losses to FGCU and FAU. any loss to Niagara or Princeton would be absolute disasters. Also mind you we have lost in back2back years to one of these teams in the opening two weeks. We need to end that trend

after that 9-0 / 7-2 stretch we run into our toughest stretch of the season imo. We play UF, Uconn, Wake Forest, FSU / Midweek games against FIU,Villinova, UCF, FAU. if we are going to go under .500 its going to happen in this stretch. We need to find a way to win 3/5 of these series 2/5 would be the worst we can do if we want to make the tournament.
